On November 1st, daylight saving time ends, and the clocks fall back an hour. This shift not only gives us an extra hour of much-needed sleep but also serves as a timely reminder to take care of a few things around the house as we approach winter.

Here are a few practical tips our team encourages Maryland homeowners, renters, and families to revisit this season:

• Know the major causes. Cooking and heating remain the leading causes of home fires. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items at least three feet from heat sources, and check electrical cords for damage.

• Test your smoke alarms. Test monthly, replace batteries yearly, and fully replace any alarm over 10 years old.
