Deductible Blues: how they first screwed us! Health insurance deductibles were inspired by the auto/property insurance industry, a proven tool for handling small claims and keeping premiums low(strong evidence shows shareholder profits were a major driver for commercial insurers adding deductibles in the 1950s). Auto deductibles were mainstream by the 1920s–1930s, decades before health plans adopted them in the 1950s, so commercial insurers like Aetna just copied the playbook to fight rising medical costs and compete with no-deductible Blue Cross plans.
