Send this to grandma... you probably should've texted her anyway

It's one of the most common scams targeting older adults, and it works because it plays on love and panic. A caller pretends to be a grandchild (or claims to be a lawyer, police officer, or bail bondsman on their behalf) saying they're in jail, in an accident, or in some kind of emergency, and they need money wired or sent immediately. They'll often beg you not to tell anyone else in the family "to avoid embarrassment."

Here's how to protect yourself and the people you love:

Hang up and call your family member directly, using a number you already have saved, not one the caller gives you.

Slow down. Scammers create urgency on purpose so you don't have time to think it through.

Don't wire money or buy gift cards for someone claiming to be in an emergency, no legitimate emergency works that way.

Talk to your family now. Agree on a code word everyone can use to verify it's really them.
