Financial Awareness Day is a good reminder that being financially aware isn’t about having a perfect budget or knowing exactly what the future holds. It’s about understanding your money well enough to make informed decisions with it.

Do you know how much of your income is committed to monthly expenses? How much you’re consistently putting into savings? What interest you’re paying on debt? Whether you have enough set aside to handle an unexpected expense?

These are simple questions, but knowing the answers can help you spot where adjustments need to be made, prepare for what’s ahead and make progress toward the things that matter to you.

The part of dorm shopping nobody talks about: protecting your debit card.

For many college students, heading to campus also means a whole new level of financial independence. A few habits can go a long way:

Keep your PIN private, even from friends and roommates.

Don’t leave your wallet or card sitting out in shared spaces.

Check your account regularly for purchases you don’t recognize.

And if your card goes missing, don’t wait to see if it turns up, lock or freeze it if your banking app allows and contact your bank right away.
