Today is World Financial Planning Day.

One of the first questions we ask clients is pretty simple:

What are you trying to accomplish with your money?

From there, financial planning gives us a framework for answering the harder questions.

Are your investments actually connected to your goals?
Are you making progress toward them?
Is your asset allocation appropriate for what you're trying to accomplish?
And are you taking more risk than you need to?

Our approach has always been to start with where you are today and where you want to go.
Then we can work backward and determine the appropriate mix of investments and strategies to help get you there.

That's one of the things I appreciate most about financial planning. It can take a complicated financial picture and turn it into a much simpler equation.

Define the goal. Build the strategy. Manage the risk. Measure the progress. Adjust when necessary.

Markets will change. Life will change. The plan should evolve with both.

That's why planning isn't a one-time exercise for us. It's at the center of the relationships we have with our clients.

We kicked things off with a Phil Wickham concert, explored the West Side Market, made a must-do stop at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—where I naturally had to get a picture with the Eddie Van Halen exhibit—and finished things off with an incredible dinner.
