Yesterday was National First Responders Day.

Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, and everyone else who runs toward the call while the rest of us wait for help to arrive.

Here in Anchorage, that means showing up through dark mornings, icy roads and weather most places never see.

To every first responder in our community, thank you. We see you, and we're grateful.

Happy Halloween week. Gather close, let me tell you a story...

Once upon a time, way up north, there was a little cabin at the edge of the trees. That cabin was yours. You’d just finished thirty long years of work. You got your handshake, settled in by the stove, and figured you had plenty of firewood to see you through the winter. Then the sun set. And didn’t rise.

Day 10, your woodpile looked a little smaller.
Day 20, you stopped counting.
Day 30, the last log burned down to embers.

Your fire went out, and you spent the rest of the long night in the cold and the dark with whatever was waiting out in the trees. That woodpile? It’s the savings you build over a career. The long night is all the years you’ll need it to last.

This story doesn’t have to end that way. Every Alaskan knows you supply the woodpile before the dark sets in. Let’s make sure yours lasts through every night ahead.

Aviation has been part of my life for a long time.

I spent 30 years in the Air Force as a crew chief, and along the way I went back to school and earned my Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle. Turns out I never get tired of learning about aircraft.

So you’ll understand why I couldn’t pass up a picture with these.

I grew up in Brooklyn, where there’s a pizza place, a deli or a bakery on just about every corner, and everybody has an opinion on which one is the best. That kind of upbringing makes me take my food seriously.

Alaska has a lot going for it, but finding food that measures up to Brooklyn takes some work. I’ve made it a bit of a personal mission to track down the best BBQ and Italian spots in town.

Anchorage friends, where’s your go-to lunch spot? I’m always open to recommendations.

Some people unwind with a good book. I unwind in a boat with a net, waiting on the fish to show up. ~~ Fishing up here is a whole different experience. The scenery alone is worth the trip, and the quiet is hard to beat.

This time, the fish cooperated. They don’t always, but I keep going back either way.

Throwback to one of my favorite views in Alaska.

Snow still hanging on the peaks, everything below finally turning green, and good people right beside me.

I’ve lived in Brooklyn, Texas, Germany and plenty of places in between. Now this is the one I get to call home.

Summer up here goes fast. We made the most of every bit of it.
