Versatile senior leader Tyler Martin and flashy junior Treven Scheenstra maintain that even though Nooksack Valley is the only 4-0 team among Whatcom County’s 10 eleven-man football squads, the Pioneers’ motto might as well be what coach Craig Bartl said for the second week in a row.
“We’re happy, but we’re not satisfied,” he summed up Nooksack’s 19-12 win over visiting Squalicum in heavy rain Friday night, Sept. 25.
“That’s right,” Martin said in total agreement. “We have a lot of work to do.”
“We’ve got to hang on to the ball,” said Scheenstra, whose improvised 70-yard touchdown dash down the left side gave the Pioneers a 19-0 lead near the end of the first quarter and pretty much their last moments of satisfaction.
When prompted, Bartl added: “I agree we have earned our 4-0 start, but that Squalicum is better than 1-3.”
Storm coach Nick Lucey, after watching his team limit the Pioneers to 72 yards in the last three quarters, agreed with that assessment.
