It might be hard to say “estate mistakes” four times fast … but it’s fairly easy to make four of them fast 🤔 That’s why we’re sharing four common mistakes you’ll want to avoid:

🖋️ Failing to include power of attorney - A power of attorney names someone you trust to act in your stead should you become incapable of making important decisions.
🖋️ Misunderstanding your estate plan - Take the time to read through and understand the plan, what it entails, and what will happen when it is put in motion.
🖋️ Forgetting to update it as circumstances change - We suggest you revise your plan at least every 5 years to make sure your current wishes are reflected and followed.
🖋️ Failing to fund revocable trusts - Assets owned by the trust are protected from being tied up in probate court. Your attorney will draw up the appropriate paperwork, but you will need to transfer the relevant assets to the trust.

As you may know, it’s almost time for Medicare’s annual enrollment period (AEP), a key opportunity to alter your Medicare health and prescription drug plans for the upcoming year. The Medicare AEP runs from October 15th to December 7th every year, making now a potentially advantageous time to review your current coverage and plan ahead for any changes next year.

Thinking about this now, before the period opens, can make the process easier and give you enough time to compare options and make an informed decision about your care. Swipe for a few areas to revisit as you prepare for the beginning of the AEP.

A little preparation now can make the process simpler and help you choose coverage that fits your needs. That said, if you’d like to go over your current plan, feel free to reach out. We are always here to help you carefully assess your needs so you can make an informed decision.

Planning for the future with an estate plan is one of the most meaningful things you can do for the people you love. Estate plans ensure your wishes are honored and that the people who matter most to you are taken care of, no matter what.

As estate planning lawyers, we can help you with:

🔹Wills to document your wishes and ensure your assets are distributed the way you intend.

🔹Trusts to protect and manage your assets for beneficiaries while potentially avoiding probate.

🔹Powers of attorney to make financial decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so.

🔹Health care directives and living wills to ensure your medical wishes are known.

🔹Beneficiary designations to ensure the right names on your accounts and policies.

🔹Probate and estate administration to guide your family through the legal process.

No matter where you are in life, it is never too early or too late to have a plan in place. Give us a call today to schedule a consultation. We are here to help you take that first step.

If you’re turning 65 soon and are unsure about what it means to enroll in Medicare, you are not alone. One of the most common questions we hear from those nearing retirement is around the timeline for signing up for Medicare.

So, we wanted to share a few important reminders to help you stay on track:

✅Know your enrollment window. Your initial enrollment window lasts for seven months — three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and three months after your birthday. Enrolling early in this timeframe can help ensure your coverage begins right when you need it.

✅Understand how to sign up. Some individuals are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, while others need to take action themselves to enroll in Original Medicare. This often depends on whether you are already receiving Social Security benefits.

✅Do not delay without a plan. Waiting too long to enroll without qualifying coverage can result in delayed coverage start dates and ongoing late-enrollment penalties.

✅Be aware of other options. If you are still working and covered under an employer plan, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that can allow you to defer your enrollment. However, missing all enrollment windows can limit your options and increase costs, so it's best to clarify this early.

Medicare decisions can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate them alone. Whether you are approaching 65 or are simply evaluating your options, contact us for guidance tailored to your situation.
