Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but there are often warning signs that can help you identify a fraudulent message. This is a real example of a text message a scammer sent claiming to be from the ECU Fraud Department. Notice the institution name in the text is incorrect (“Education FCU”), the logo on the fake business card is incorrect, the phone number listed is not an ECU phone number, and they are continuing to engage via text to get a response. These are all red flags.
Remember, ECU will never ask you to reply to a text message with personal, account, or login information. If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be ECU, do not respond, click links, or call the phone number provided. If you are unsure whether a communication is legitimate, contact ECU directly at 806-358-7777.
