The Amarillo Police Department responded to a report of shots fired on Plum Creek Drive at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. According to APD, two people were involved in a gang-related dispute, which escalated as they began shooting. They and four others were struck, and all were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Texas DPS troopers and Potter County Sheriff’s deputies also responded, and DPS apprehended a suspect while leaving the area. Jeremiah Nicodemus Mandale Hunter Jr., 18, was booked into the Potter County Detention Center on Thursday, charged with tampering with evidence. Detectives are investigating the incident.

On Thursday afternoon, APD addressed comments about gang violence and public safety in a post to social media.

“Like many in our community, we are deeply saddened and concerned by the recent acts of violence in Amarillo. We understand the fear, frustration, and questions many of our citizens are experiencing, and we want you to know that we hear you and we share those concerns,” the post said.

APD again shared a video released in late May, in which Chief Thomas Hover addresses the public and their concerns about violent crime. As we previously reported, APD has deployed a new dedicated gang unit and has increased patrol operation staffing.

This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as they become available.

We have received reports of a scam targeting family members of inmates housed in the Randall County Jail. Scammers are calling individuals and falsely claiming to be the Jail Sergeant. They are telling family members that, in exchange for money, they can have their loved one placed into a rehabilitation program.

Please be aware that the Randall County Jail will never solicit money over the phone for inmate placement into any program. If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal or financial information. If you have any concerns, hang up and call the Randall County Sheriff's Office at 806-468-5800.
