🚨 Winter Storm Alert for the Texas Panhandle! 🧊 Heavy snow and freezing temps are heading our way this weekend (Jan 23-25). Stay safe out there—here are key driving and home tips from the Robert Dean Insurance Agency. We're here to help protect what matters most.
In your car:
Slow down well below the posted speed limit—give yourself plenty of extra time to stop, as braking distances can triple on snow or ice.
Increase your following distance to at least 5-6 seconds (or even more) behind the vehicle ahead.
Accelerate, brake, and turn as gently and smoothly as possible to avoid skids. If you start to slide, ease off the gas (or brakes), steer gently in the direction you want to go, and regain control without slamming anything.
Pack an emergency kit: blankets, flashlight, water/snacks, charger, warm clothes, and a shovel—just in case.
If you get stuck, stay with your vehicle, run the engine sparingly for heat (clear the exhaust!), and call for help.
For your home:
Prevent frozen pipes: Insulate exposed pipes (especially in crawl spaces or unheated areas), open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate, and let faucets drip slowly (a steady drip, not just a trickle) during the coldest hours—both hot and cold sides if needed.
Keep your thermostat at least 55-65°F (even when away) to maintain heat inside walls where pipes hide—dropping too low risks bursts.
Seal drafts: Check weatherstripping around doors/windows, add caulk if needed, and close off unused rooms to keep heat where you need it.
Clear snow/ice from sidewalks, driveways, and entryways to prevent slips—use ice melt safely and watch for buildup on roofs if heavy.
Prep your heating system: Change furnace filters if due, ensure vents are clear, and never use grills or generators indoors (carbon monoxide risk!).
Stock up: Have flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, water, and blankets ready in case of power outages.
Outdoor prep: Disconnect and drain hoses, shut off outdoor faucets, and cover them to avoid freezing.
