It’s that time of year again and as realtors, we want to make sure that we not only take all the deductions we are entitled to, but that it is done right for Uncle Sam!

IRC section 162 of the tax code says we are
“allowed as a deduction ALL the ORDINARY and NECESSARY expenses paid or incurred during the taxable year in carrying on ANY trade or business...”

As a former revenue agent for the IRS, I audited hundreds of tax returns over nearly 14 years. The most common DISALLOWANCES were those deductions that were NOT ordinary AND necessary per IRC section 162.
