Listen up peeps! You drink and drive and kill someone you're now looking at 5 years min. Do everyone a favor, call for a ride home. You should not think twice about the money for a cab or uber. A dui will cost you thousands and possibly time in jail. Think about it.
In 2015, Lauren and CJ Davis were celebrating CJ's 26th birthday with tickets to the Maverick's game. While crossing the street on the way to the game, a drunk driver struck and killed them both. It took three and a half years before any sentence would be delivered and in the end, the man, who had previous DWIs, who was responsible for the deaths of two bright, promising, young people, would serve only 4 months behind bars and a probation sentence.
HB 3598 seeks prevent these injustices by mandating that intoxication manslaughter carry a minimum of 5 years imprisonment.
While this bill can’t bring back Lauren or CJ, I’m hopeful that it will bring justice to other grieving and heartbroken families. I’m proud to say that the Texas House overwhelmingly passed HB 3598 today- now named Lauren and CJ’s Law.
