I've received increased reports of scammers disguising themselves as accountants and tax professionals. Share these tips to ensure the accountant is a real accountant:

✅️ Try to get a referral from a friend, family, fellow business owner, or your local town group.

⚠️ Use Discretion when Googling "Accountants Near Me" or hiring off Social Media.

✅️ Request an in-person meeting or consultation.

⚠️ Use Discretion if they do not allow in person meetings, even if you offer to travel.

✅️ Search for a long term Online Presence, reviews, and history of their business.

⚠️ Use Discretion if their social media/websites were just recently established a week or a month ago.

✅️ Ask about their onboarding process requirements.

⚠️ Use Discretion if you're a new client and they ask for immediate payment or deposits, without an onboarding process/engagement letter.

✅️ Test: Ask them an accounting question you already know the answer to ("What is the maximum number of dependents I can receive a Child Tax Credit for?" Etc).

⚠️ Use Discretion and be weary of "too good to be true" promises, such as large refund promises, or promises to eliminate tax bills from your tax return.
