I'm excited to announce that I've just earned my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP®️) certification!

I owe a huge thanks to my family and friends for their support throughout this journey. Your encouragement meant the world to me.

Through the process of earning my certification I learned a great deal of new information relating to estate planning, tax planning, risk management, retirement savings and income planning, and psychology of financial planning that has equiped me to offer even more strategic and tailored advice to my clients.

The one thing I enjoy the most about being a financial planner is the chance to help people navigate their financial lives. It's incredibly rewarding to guide individuals through their financial journeys, helping them gain confidence and provide peace of mind.

I'm excited to continue this journey with my clients, providing enhanced financial solutions. Here's to your financial success!

Yesterday I spent the day at the 2nd Annual Financial Literacy Makes Cents Conference.

It was an amazing free conference for NM Educators who teach Financial Literacy in the community, hosted by Jump $tart Colaition for Personal Financial Literacy.

As you can see by the second image, 90% of Americans say money impacts their stress level and only 25% of people feel extremely optimistic about their financial future. Yikes!

As an educator, my hope is to equip high school and college students with personal finance information they can use to take control of their own finances and share that knowledge with their friends and family.

It was so encouraging to see so many organizations who share that passion for personal finance, and hope to build a brighter future by educating our youth on basic personal finance principles.

My favorite breakout session was hosted by Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF). Their mission is to ensure that every U.S high school student graduates having taken a one-semester course in personal finance by the year 2030. Currently only 26 states have that requirement, but I'm encouraged that they will continue to make progress to include every state in the next six years!

I'm confident that if more people felt they had ownership of their finances they would feel more optimistic about money and their financial future.

Recession Rumors? Not So Fast! The Economy Shows Signs of Strength...

Some of you may remember my post from last Summer discussing the interesting idea of how inflation has fallen sharply due to the consumer having widespread pessimism about the economy regardless of the actual economic situation, aka vibecession.

As you can see from the University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment, the data shows that consumers were more pessimistic in 2022/2023 than ALL four of the past recessions, including the Dot com bubble and the Great Recession. All while unemployment has remained under 4% for the longest period going back to the 1960s!

As you can see from the chart there has been a sharp increase in consumer sentiment in January, because we've finally seen a steady trend of average hourly wages exceeding inflation for 8 straight months.

That brings us to today...

The 2023 Q4 Gross Domestic Product (GPD) report was released, and it far exceeded economic expectations.

As you can see from the second chart, real GDP grew 3.3% from Q3 to Q4. That brings the total average for the year to 2.5%. What's so pessimistic about that!?

Some would then assume that economic strength in consumer spending would mean that inflation is heading higher.

Not so fast! The Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation (personal consumption expenditures - PCE) rose at a 2% annual rate in Q4, which is in line with the Fed's target.

Can we call this a soft landing?

While it's too early to declare victory, the Q4 data paints a picture of an economy navigating the current challenges with remarkable resilience. 3% growth amidst rate hikes represents a notable achievement, particularly considering the progress made on the inflation front.

Last week, I shared an unforgettable lunch date with my 2nd-grade daughter at her school's heartwarming Thanksgiving luncheon.

I loved her entusiasm as she introduced me to her friends/classmates and when she finished eating her apple crisp dessert and said "Best Lunch Ever!" Not bad for a $5 turkey dinner!

Her excitement at our lunch reminded of the countless blessings that enrich my life. I am thankful for my amazing family, the rock that provides constant support and unconditional love. I am grateful for my friends, the companions who bring laughter and joy into my life. And I am deeply appreciative of the Albuquerque community that offers a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

In a world that often seems focused on the negative, it is easy to overlook the simple blessings that surround us. But today, I choose to celebrate the abundance that fills my life. These are the treasures that truly matter, the ones that bring light and warmth to our hearts.

So, as we gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to cherish the blessings that enrich our lives. Let us express our gratitude for the people who bring joy and meaning to our existence. And let us remember that true happiness lies not in material possessions or fleeting achievements, but in the deep connections we share with one another.

Baseball is back! ⚾

Our team had a blast during opening week at the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Not only did we enjoy the game, hot dogs/Dion's pizza, but we were fortunate enough to get a special visit from everyone's favorite mascot, Orbit!

I'm so grateful to be part of a team that not only cares about doing great work, but also cares about people and knows how to have fun!

Can't believe it's already been 1 year since I took the leap into my new career as a financial advisor at RBC Wealth Management.

As a CPA and accounting and finance instructor at Central New Mexico Community College, I recognized my passion for helping people understand the importance of managing their finances. It was a natural transition for me to pursue a career in financial advising where I can continue to help make a significant difference in people's lives.

I'm grateful for the opportunities and experiences I've had this past year, and I'm excited to continue helping clients achieve their financial goals.

I want to thank my wife Aleigh Diller and all my friends and family who supported me making this very rewarding career change.

Life is too short to live with regrets, so if you're thinking about making a career change, go for it!

I had so much fun yesterday teaching local 3rd graders about business and finance as a volunteer through Junior Achievement of New Mexico!

Yesterday we were at Bernalillo Elementary School and it was so fun to see the students get excited about , the importance of business to communities, and what it means to be an .

Thanks to the other volunteers who I roped into volunteering with me!

If you're interested in giving back to your community, Junior Achievement is looking for 70 more volunteers next Spring.

Shout out to teachers everywhere! It's exhausting being on your feet and leading lessons all day. Thank you for all you do!

Has inflation finally peaked?

The October Consumer Price Index (CPI) report was released today and it shows year-over-year inflation at 7.7%. It's the first time since February that inflation was less than 8%.

The report showed that certain items are starting to plateau or decrease (i.e. Apparel, Utilities) while other areas are still rising (Shelter and Transportation).

While it's a good sign for the economy and the markets, the Federal Reserve has stated it will be data dependent each month before they plan to stop raising rates to fight inflation.

I had a blast volunteering at last weeks 50th annual as a member of the Albuquerque Kiwanis club. The balloon fiesta is the largest fundraiser for the Albuquerque Kiwanis club and let me tell you it's a LOT of work.

Growing up in Albuquerque I've always appreciated the balloon fiesta and now I have an even greater appreciation for the event knowing how much work and volunteer support is needed to coordinate the entire event.

Thank you to all the volunteers from all over Albuquerque who helped sell tickets, scan tickets, run coffee/hot chocolate/snacks to volunteers, finance committee members, and all others involved!

Outside of a few rain cancellations, the 50th anniversary was a huge success!

This week I'm looking forward to sleeping in past 2:15am!

So proud of my daughter, Josie! It was such a fun morning volunteering at her school's Jog-A-Thon!

She was determined to accomplish two things:
1) Raise more than $200 in donations
2) Run at least 30 laps

You can tell by her huge smile that she accomplished both of her goals!

Thank you to all the friends and family who helped donate and support her/Osuna elementary!

Have you ever heard the term "defensive" or "sector" when it comes to investing and wonder what they mean?

In the chart below you'll notice there are 11 sectors that each publicly traded company falls under.

Some sectors are considered defensive versus cyclical.

Defensive stocks don't necessarily follow the cycles of the economy and are necessary/needed as part of everyday life.

Defensive sector examples are: Utilities, Consumer Staples, and Health Care. People will need these items/services regardless of the state of the economy.

Cyclical sectors are what they sound...they tend to follow the trends/cycles in the economy. When the economy is doing well, people have more to spend on discretionary items/services.

Cyclical companies include restaurants, hotels, airlines, furniture, high-end clothing, and automobile manufacturers.

Being aware of economic cycles can help manage risk and improve investment returns.
