Are you in the Capital Region and looking for ways to help others in the current situation? Several groups at UAlbany are using 3D Printing to help medical personnel, first responders, etc. One of them is University at Albany, SUNY College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity. They are using 3DP printers and a growing group of faculty, staff, student, and community volunteers to create Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) face shields.

We are looking for volunteers. You don't need to have a 3D printer, or any particular skills to help out. Just a desire to assist others in these trying times.

We need more volunteers to help assemble 3D printed mask for our local health care professionals, you can help!

Some of us might be in a position to do some skill-building right now. If so, CAD skills might be a good complement to 2D printing. There are a lot of tools out there. One of the widely used ones is Fusion 360. If you are a student or educator, you can get a license for it for free.

Free for students, teachers and educators, Fusion 360 is everything you need for design, engineering and collaboration. Works on both Mac and PC.

Here is the site for the overall eNABLE project. If you haven't taken a look at it lately, it is definitely worthwhile. In particular, if you're thinking of eventually creating hands, take a look at the eNABLE devices link (under Learn More).

We haven't posted in (quite) a while. We're just busy, but we haven't gone away. eNABLE is still a worthwhile project. At the moment, we all have some more immediate concerns. We hope you're all safe and well.

We've had some ideas of things you can do. We'll share some posts with ideas of activities that you can do. The emphasis is on learning and skill building. If you have any additional ideas please feel free to post them as well.

Best wishes to you all from the folks at the eNABLE Chapter of UAlbany.

More details in the near future. But, we're looking to bring this group out of hiatus in the new year. The Capital Region has a great many people interested in helping others with eNABLE projects, and we hope to be able to help organize that.

Local coverage of the Center of Gravity-organized eNABLE workshop that UAlbany participated in. It was a great experience for the volunteers, the students, and for Karissa.

With the help from kids across the Capital Region, a local girl received the gift of a lifetime.

Did you know that E-Nable can trace its origins back to a steampunk convention?

"In 2011, my husband Ivan Owen, created a crazy metal functional puppet hand to wear to our first ever steampunk convention. When we returned home from our adventure, he decided to post a short video of it on Youtube. Little did we know that one simple video clip would change our lives and thousands of others – forever.

A simple Youtube video of the hand, led to an email from a carpenter named Richard from South Africa, who had lost his fingers in a woodworking accident and a collaboration across 10,000 miles to create a replacement finger for him that lasted nearly a year. They worked through various prototypes and designs via skype and email, using objects they could both find around their homes and respective countries.

This ultimately led to a mother of a 5 year old boy contacting them to see about the creation of a tiny version of this hand for a little boy named Liam who lives in South Africa who was born with no fingers on his right hand."

"Hand kits allow e-NABLE to provide hands to those in the remotest parts of the world. Since these hands are assembled by groups through assembly events, additional lives are also enriched through the realization that what is created will impact the life of another individual in a meaningful way. “With the help of the larger 3d printing community, we hope to provide several thousand hands over the next two years and reach those in the remote areas that need them most. No contribution is too large or too small, together we can change the world,” said Melina Brown, Director of Operations at eNABLE."

e-NABLE, the organization behind the original 3D printed prosthetic hand, is reaching out to the 3D printing community to crowdsource the largest donation of 3D printed hands ever in order to meet requests for over 1,000 hands from all over the world. e-NABLE is, thus, teaming up with 3DPrinterOS an...
