I had the pleasure of living in Westchester County and working in New York City from June 17, 1997 to September 7, 2001. I loved every part of being in the New York metro area and am grateful I had that experience. I met many great friends I still have to this day — New Yorkers to the bone.
How do I remember the exact dates? On Friday, June 16, 1997, I was packed and ready to move the next day, and watched Dave Mlicki and the Mets shut out the Yankees 6-0 in the first-ever Subway Series game. Then, of course, September 7, 2001 is the Friday before September 11. Although I had moved back to Albany officially in June, I continued to work for the NYC-based company and travel periodically back and forth, including that week before 9/11. Those are dates I WILL NEVER FORGET.
On the morning of 9/11, I walked into the waiting room of a car dealership here in Albany, looking for a seat while I waited for an oil change. Instead, the TV showed me a smoking first tower, then the plane hit the second. I just burst out something like, "My friend works there." I immediately tried calling on the phone in the waiting room, of course with no luck. As I left, strangers consoled me and told me they hoped he was okay.
Thank God, he was - he had gotten out. It's an amazing story, but not mine to tell. I'm just lucky to continue to have him in my life.
We all know that so many did not make it out, and more continue to be lost as a result of that day and the response afterward.
What I didn't know on that day is that three and a half months later, on January 2, 2002, I would start working with volunteer firefighters and the local governments they serve. Over these 25 years, I've come to understand, in a deep way, the impact 9/11 had on communities radiating out from NYC, plus PA and DC — specifically, how so many people rallied to help in so many ways. People who, at the time, I had no idea I would now have the extreme honor to know and work alongside.
Thank you to everyone who responded.
Thank you to everyone who supported the responders.
Thank you to everyone still supporting those grieving the lost.
Thank you to everyone still supporting the survivors.
Thank you to everyone who has vowed with me to NEVER FORGET.
