NOTHING BUT FLOWERS
For artist Michael Conlin, this mural is his way of giving those flowers back to a city that has played an important role in his life and artistic journey.
In partnership with the Albany Convention Center Authority (ACCA), Albany Capital Center, Albany Center Gallery (ACG), and artist Michael Conlin, “Nothing but Flowers” celebrates Albany’s history while looking toward its future. Measuring at 52 feet tall by 86 feet wide, the mural is located at the Albany Capital Center’s expansion at 126 State St in downtown Albany!
Quote from artist Michael Conlin: “Context is something I like to explore throughout all my work. “Nothing but Flowers” points to the metaphorical idea of giving flowers and removing the conditions often tied to that action. Albany has always been a special city to me, it’s where I was able to explore my work as an artist, and it’s home to many friends and family. I have nothing but flowers to give back to it and the people living in the community.
The lettering and colors are a nod to the history of the city, drawing on the style of the surrounding buildings. It’s also meant to represent the old leading to the new, starting more traditional in the lettering and leading toward looser flowers and lines in the lower second half. The flowers symbolize growth and renewal and as Albany and the downtown area is transitioning into continued growth, I wanted to have this mural be a seed that celebrates this new beginning.”
We’re proud to celebrate Michael’s work and our ongoing partnership with the Albany Convention Center Authority and Albany Capital Center to keep bringing more art everywhere.
