BETA is pleased to announce that we recently joined the NIOSH Total Worker Health® Affiliate Program. The NIOSH TWH program integrates protection from work-related safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance worker well-being. BETA will work alongside NIOSH to advance the principles and practices of Total Worker Health, and we’ll collaborate on projects to raise visibility and TWH adoption by developing and delivering communications, programs, interventions, and events.

BETA has long promoted the interconnectedness of work and non-work factors that impact worker safety, health, and well-being, and sees TWH as an instrumental component of this work. We’re excited to be on this new journey with NIOSH and promote TWH to BETA members and beyond. Check out the NIOSH press release at https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/newsroom/updates/upd-03-03-26.html

This first heat wave is brutal! 🫠🥵 The high temps we're experiencing are even more unusual and dangerous due to the timing. Heat advisories and extreme heat warnings are in place, yet our bodies have not acclimated to the heat this early in the year, and there is an elevated risk of heat illness. BETA Healthcare Group reminds its members about high heat procedures and Cal/OSHA regulations that establish required safety measures for both outdoor and indoor workers.

Employers:
• 70° - Train employees and implement procedures
• 80°- Provide shady areas for breaks, meals and rest
• 95° (or higher) – Schedule additional water breaks and cool-down periods

Workers:
• Water – Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day
• Clothing – Wear lightweight or light-colored clothing (a hat can be helpful)
• Shade/Rest – Take breaks in the shade or a cool, sheltered environment
• Communicate – Use a buddy system to check in with others and your supervisor

To learn more about high heat procedures and how employees can stay safe, resources for your Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Plan or access to the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool see our Summer Safety flyer athttps://betahg.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/BETA-Summer-Safety-Flyer.pdf | www.betahg.com

It’s Patient Safety Awareness Week, and this year’s theme of “Team Up for Patient Safety” really resonates for us at BETA Healthcare Group. Culture and teamwork are so important. Culture change starts with curiosity, attention, voice and organizational learning – something we emphasize in our BETA HEART® communication and resolution program. This approach can help in combating these pressing patient safety challenges as identified by ECRI in their 2026 report:

• The impact on system improvement when a culture of blame hinders learning (challenge 8)
• Lack of recognition and reporting of harm events (challenge #4)

BETA supports Patient Safety Awareness Week and all individuals, safety-focused organizations, health systems, providers, hospitals and other healthcare organizations that are advancing this work. By building trust, nurturing talent, building accountability structures for patient safety and strengthening culture, we can make an impact. Let’s go! www.betahg.com

Workplace violence in healthcare settings is on the rise. Awareness, leadership commitment, and clearly defined policy, reporting procedures and training are imperative to help protect healthcare personnel, patients, their families, and visitors. In California, SB 553, the Workplace Violence Prevention Act mandates most California employers (including healthcare facilities) to establish, implement and maintain a comprehensive workplace violence prevention plan that addresses hazard assessments, employee training, incident reporting and emergency response procedures. BETA invites its members to join us for an important webinar that provides a comprehensive overview of SB 553 titled “Workplace Violence Prevention” with Michael Letizia, SHRM-SCP, President and CEO of Letizia HR Solutions. Participants will learn about the implications for healthcare facilities and the legislation’s requirements, including its key provisions and how to develop practical strategies for implementing a compliant Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). The webinar is on August 14, 2025, from 12-1pm, and members can sign up today at https://betahg.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1JCy5p_eT967BvpP_pXitQ?_x_zm_rtaid=TbwecQGpRAa9r0Tqm8rN-Q.1754685217067.f8fc0081ffd54a619ad3f87aaf08ec39&_x_zm_rhtaid=520 #/registration

With the heat wave leading to recent high temp records being broken across U.S. according to NOAA data, BETA Healthcare Group would like to remind its members about high heat procedures and the Cal/OSHA regulation that establishes required safety measures for indoor heat illness prevention. In high heat conditions, both outdoor and indoor workers in healthcare can overheat and be at risk for heat illness due to their work environment, physical jobs that require strenuous activity (or a combination of both). Employers need to be prepared to implement specific high heat procedures:

• 70° - Train employees and implement procedures
• 80°- Provide shady areas for breaks, meals and rest
• 95° (or higher) – Schedule additional water breaks and cool-down periods

To learn more about high heat procedures and how employees can stay safe and gain access to information and resources regarding having an Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Plan, see our Summer Safety flyer athttps://betahg.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/BETA-Summer-Safety-Flyer.pdf

Today is National Nurses Day, the start of a week in which we recognize and honor the impact that nurses have on our lives. While at BETA, we believe that nurses deserve to be celebrated all year long, it is this year’s National Nurses Week theme, “The Power of Nurses” that reminds us how much nurses accomplish every day, every week and every year. From nurses in hospitals or other point-of-care settings who keep us healthy and thriving to nurses who develop and lead safety and quality improvement programs and initiatives to protect both patients and employees, we salute you. You are seen and appreciated. Thank you for all you do. This week and every week. www.betahg.com

Patients have the right to fully understand any medical treatment or procedure before they receive it and also agree to it. All too often, patients do not understand the risks, benefits and alternatives, even after signing a consent form. BETA invites its members to join us for this engaging webinar titled “Patient-Centered Informed Consent.” Jean-Luc Tilly, MPA, PMP, of The Leapfrog Group will talk about the work of Leapfrog’s expert panel (exclusively composed of patients and family caregivers) in advocating for a new standard focused on the consent process. Participants will also learn about current issues in informed consent, how performance varies nationwide on this indicator and how this new healthcare quality measure was developed. Join us for this webinar on April 8th from 12-1pm by signing up at https://betahg.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_X3bNcZUmTrOzndW8jeQY2A?_x_zm_rtaid=K7u8mQ4nTdC90hxpF4ZImA.1743704608829.8f5e8ebc0576e5d35002330c255faed7&_x_zm_rhtaid=604 #/registration
