ATTENTION: Please follow these recommended steps to proactively protect your home and family, before the possible ice storm!
🏠 Around the Home:
Insulate pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in insulation or heat tape (especially in basements, attics, and crawl spaces).
Keep a small trickle of water running from faucets during severe cold to prevent freezing.
Seal gaps and drafts: Check windows, doors, and vents for leaks.
Use weatherstripping or caulking to keep heat in and cold air out.
Inspect your heating system: Have your unit serviced, replace air filters and test your thermostat
Protect your roof and gutters: Clear gutters of leaves and debris before freezing temperatures hit to prevent ice dams.
Prepare your walkways and driveway: Buy ice melt or sand in advance.
⚡ Power and Safety
Prepare for power outages: Have flashlights, batteries, and blankets ready.
Protect electronics with surge protectors.
Consider a backup generator if you live in an area prone to outages.
Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Cold weather increases the use of heating equipment, which can raise carbon monoxide risks.
Test devices and replace batteries.
❄️ Outdoor Prep
Winterize outdoor faucets and hoses:
Disconnect hoses and drain outdoor spigots. Use insulated faucet covers if available.
Trim nearby trees:
Heavy ice can cause branches to snap and damage roofs, vehicles, or power lines.
Stock emergency supplies:
Include bottled water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, and essential medications.
