Most people have no idea this exists… but it can change everything for the right person.

A surviving spouse may still be eligible to use a VA home loan benefit.

Here’s where that applies:

• The Veteran passed in service or from a service-connected disability and the spouse has not remarried

• The Veteran was classified as a POW or MIA

• The Veteran passed in service or from a service-connected disability, and the spouse remarried after age 57

Here’s the piece that matters most…

In many cases, eligibility is tied to Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

If DIC is already in place:

• A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) may already exist in the system

• The loan file must be structured correctly, including both the Veteran’s and surviving spouse’s information

Where I see people get stuck is not knowing where to start.

If there’s any uncertainty about eligibility, a Veteran Service Officer (VSO) can walk through the process step by step and make sure nothing gets missed.

This is one of those benefits that deserves more attention… because for the right family, it can open a door that most assume is closed.
