Back to School Made Easier!
Brought to you by your friends at Roanoke Valley Insurance of Ahoskie.

Back-to-school season brings new teachers, new schedules and plenty of excitement, but it can also bring rushed mornings, forgotten homework and the dreaded 9:30 p.m. announcement: “I need poster board tomorrow!” Fortunately, a few simple changes around the house can make the school week easier for everyone. Start with a grab-and-go snack station by dedicating a refrigerator drawer or pantry basket to easy choices kids can grab themselves. String cheese, yogurt, grapes, bananas, whole-grain crackers, popcorn, hummus and cut vegetables are convenient options. Preparing several portions on Sunday can save valuable time throughout the week, and older children can help choose their snacks.

One of the easiest ways to reduce morning chaos is to start the morning the night before. Have everyone choose clothes, pack backpacks, find shoes and prepare lunches before bedtime. Create a designated spot near the door for backpacks, sports equipment, instruments and anything else that needs to leave the house. A simple homework station can also help. You don't need an elaborate home office, just fill a portable container with pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, paper and other commonly needed supplies. And keep some poster board around. Eventually, you're probably going to need it!

The daily ride to and from school can become family time rather than simply another chore. Create a morning playlist, play trivia or “Name That Song,” or let your child become the family DJ. After school, instead of asking the traditional “How was school?” try something more specific, such as “What was the funniest thing that happened today?” or “What was the best part of your day?” You may discover that these questions lead to much better conversations.

It's also important to give children something fun to anticipate during the school week. Try Taco Tuesday, a Wednesday family walk, Thursday game night or Friday pizza-and-movie night. A bike ride, backyard game or evening walk can help everyone unwind after a busy day. At the same time, don't overschedule the family. Sports and extracurricular activities are wonderful, but children need downtime too. Leave some afternoons open for playing outside, reading, relaxing or simply doing nothing.

Finally, keep one family calendar for school events, appointments, practices and projects. Spend five minutes each Sunday reviewing the coming week together. Back-to-school success isn't about creating the perfect routine. It's about eliminating little headaches, planning ahead and remembering to leave some room for fun.

Article: Hydration Tricks for Summer Fun
- Brought to you by Roanoke Valley Insurance of Ahoskie

Summer is the season for beach trips, pool days, backyard cookouts, ballgames, fishing, festivals, and long afternoons outside with family and friends. From neighborhood parks to waterfront events, good hydration can make the difference between feeling refreshed and feeling drained. All that fun can also bring heat, humidity, and plenty of sweating. Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to keep your energy up and help your body handle hot weather. The trick is not just drinking water when you remember. It is building easy hydration habits into your summer routine. Start before you head out the door. Drink a glass of water in the morning and another before leaving for an outdoor activity. Many people wait until they feel thirsty, but thirst often means your body is already asking for fluids. Keeping a reusable water bottle nearby makes drinking easier, especially if you are walking around a festival, working in the yard, traveling, or spending the day near the water.

Make water more interesting by adding natural flavor. Lemon, lime, orange slices, cucumber, strawberries, blueberries, mint, or watermelon can make plain water feel like a summer treat. You can also freeze fruit into ice cubes and drop them into your bottle or glass. Kids often enjoy this, and it makes drinking water feel more fun than forced. Eat your water, too. Summer fruits and vegetables can help support hydration because many contain a lot of water. Watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges, cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, and strawberries are great warm-weather choices. Pack them in a cooler for road trips, beach days, sports tournaments, and picnics. A cold fruit cup or crisp cucumber slices can be refreshing when the heat starts wearing you down.

If you are sweating heavily, think about electrolytes. Your body loses more than water when you sweat. It also loses minerals such as sodium and potassium. For light activity, water and healthy snacks are usually enough. For long outdoor events, sports, heavy yard work, or very hot days, an electrolyte drink or electrolyte packet may help. Look for options that are not loaded with sugar, and remember that they should support hydration, not replace water completely. Create hydration reminders. Drink water at natural breaks, such as before getting in the car, when arriving at an event, after walking around for thirty minutes, before meals, and before heading back home. Parents can call quick “water breaks” during outdoor play. Adults can set phone reminders or use a marked water bottle that shows how much to drink by certain times of day.

Summer fun is better when you feel good enough to enjoy it. With a little planning, hydration can become second nature. Pack water, add flavor, eat water-rich foods, replace electrolytes when needed, and listen to your body. These small tricks can help keep your summer safe, comfortable, and full of good memories. It is a small habit that helps every summer plan go more smoothly.
