🌴 Ever come back from a beach vacation and half-joke, "I'm never coming home. Am I just going to live here"?

Yeah, a lot of folks say that. And for some, it's not as far-fetched as it feels on the flight back.

According to 2026 rankings from International Living and Retire Finder, a couple can often live comfortably in places like Portugal, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Thailand for a fraction of a typical U.S. retirement budget:

🇻🇳 Vietnam (Hanoi): ~$1,800/month
🇹🇭 Thailand (Chiang Mai): ~$2,300/month
🇲🇽 Mexico (Mérida): ~$2,640/month
🇨🇷 Costa Rica (San Ramón): ~$2,900/month
🇵🇹 Portugal (Braga): ~$2,928/month
🇪🇸 Spain (Valencia): ~$3,200/month

We're not going to pretend it's all sunsets and mai tais. Retiring abroad comes with real tradeoffs, healthcare access, U.S. tax obligations (yes, they follow you), visas, and distance from family back home.

Retirement is about more than cost. It's worth considering cost of living, healthcare, taxes, housing, safety, climate, and family proximity together, not just the price tag.

💬 If money were no object, where would you retire, and would you actually go?

📈 How long could it take to reach your first $100,000?

It comes down to three key factors:
💵 How much you invest each month
📊 The return your money earns
⏳ How much time you give it to grow

For example, someone investing $500 per month could hypothetically reach $100,000 in:
🐢 About 13.5 years at 3%
📈 About 11.1 years at 7%
🚀 About 9.8 years at 10%

Same contribution. Same consistency. A very different timeline.

That is why it matters not only how much you save, but also where your money is invested.

💡 High fees, outdated allocations, or old 401(k)s sitting in default funds may quietly slow your progress.

🧭 Your timeline matters, too. Someone with 25 years to invest may be able to handle more market movement than someone who needs the money in seven years.

The goal is not to find the “perfect” investment. It is to make thoughtful decisions, stay consistent, and give your money time to work. 🌱

📉 The war in Iran is escalating. The stock market is at all-time highs. Should you be worried?

If you've been watching the news, it's an understandable question. Geopolitical conflict, market highs, tariff talk, every year seems to bring a fresh reason to feel uneasy about your portfolio.

But here's what history actually shows: across 21 major U.S. military conflicts since World War II, the S&P 500 declined an average of roughly 6% from the initial shock to the market bottom, and typically recovered to pre-event levels in about 25 days. In roughly 75% of cases, the market was higher 12 months after the crisis began.

That's not a prediction, it's a pattern from the past. Short-term headlines create short-term volatility. Long-term investors who stay the course have historically been rewarded.

⭐ The takeaway isn't "ignore the news." It's this: don't let a 24-hour headline dictate a 30-year plan.

Today, on National Nonprofit Day, we’re celebrating the organizations, volunteers, and donors who make our communities stronger.

❤️ Charitable giving can do more than support a cause you care about. For eligible IRA owners, a qualified charitable distribution may count toward a required minimum distribution and may provide tax advantages.

🤝 If charitable giving is part of your financial plan, talk with your financial and tax professionals about whether a QCD may be right for you.

💰 How much would you need to save to reach your 2026 contribution goals?

Retirement savings can feel like a big number when you're staring at annual contribution limits. Breaking it down into monthly or per-paycheck amounts can make it feel a lot more doable.

Whether your goal is maxing out an IRA, contributing more to your 401(k), or making use of an HSA, consistency is usually what matters most.

You don't have to hit the max overnight. Every contribution moves you closer to your long-term goals.

If your employer offers a matching contribution, consider contributing enough to get the full match if it fits your situation... it can be a valuable workplace benefit.

📊 Are you ahead... or do you still have a little catching up to do?

One of the biggest questions we hear from folks around Abingdon is: "Am I saving enough for retirement?"

Fidelity, the largest 401(k) provider in the country, publishes a simple benchmark to help answer that. As a general guide, aim to have:

• 1x your salary saved by age 30
• 3x by 40
• 6x by 50
• 8x by 60
• 10x by 67

For someone earning $80,000/year, that works out to roughly $80K by 30, $240K by 40, $480K by 50, $640K by 60, and $800K by 67.

Remember, these are benchmarks, not a scorecard. Whether you're just getting started or getting close to retirement, consistency matters more than perfection. The most important step is continuing to make progress toward your goals.
