The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) released its 2021 Mid-Year Report of law enforcement officer fatalities.

This year’s Mid-Year Report indicates a significant increase in officer deaths and could potentially be the deadliest year for law enforcement on record, if trends continue.

So far in 2021, there have been 155 line-of-duty officer deaths.
This number does not include Correctional Officers or other staff killed in a LODD

(The Report does not include the numbers of Officers forced to take time off due to life threatening injuries)

On January 20th, Westwego (Louisiana) Police Officer Michael Louviere had just finished his overnight shift and was heading home. He was wearing his full uniform at the time of this incident. A little after 6:00 a.m, Michael observed what he believed to be a traffic accident and stopped to help. He immediately exited his vehicle and approached the woman that was involved in the accident. Michael was unaware that she was shot multiple times by her ex-boyfriend, and that he had been chasing her in his vehicle when she crashed. As Michael was rendering first aid to the victim, the suspect approached him from behind and shot him once in the head. Both Michael and the woman (who was 8 weeks pregnant) died of their wounds. Just hours before Michael was killed, he had saved an unresponsive woman's life by administering CPR. Officer Michael Louviere was 26 years old, a husband, father of 2 and a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran of Afghanistan. He had served with the Westwego Police Department for just a year and a half.
