Because the business of making masonry units (blocks, bricks) in Uganda is not regulated by the national bureau of standards, designers tend to avoid using walls as load bearing elements of a building. Your structural drawings would otherwise show wall detailing and bricks strength specifications but walls are consistently not part of our structural blue prints. A block that gives a minimum compressive strength of 4.1MPa at 28 days (ASTM C129) is therefore good for both strength and durability performance when used in your buildings. Quality is cost based and a demand for strength values much higher than those advanced by the standards will unnecessarily cause construction costs to go high if the construction is regular.
