It’s that time of year again. Everyone’s sharing what they achieved in 2025. We thought we’d share what we learned instead. 📚 🗺️ 🚗

Don’t get us wrong, 2025 was a record-breaking year for us.

However, this year was all about the road — across borders and value chains — not to chase headlines or growth metrics, but to understand where East African agriculture comes from, and why financing it still doesn’t work the way it should.

Most of those lessons came from many of you.

So thank you to everyone we travelled with, met along the way, argued with, learned from, and are already planning to travel with again in 2026.

In no particular order: NKG East Africa, Holland Dairy, Agri Evolve, Sucafina (Ugacof, Rwacof), TRAIDE Foundation, SAIS, EKiBBO Farming Services Ltd, Cheche (Veris Investments), Ndugu Coffee, Zombo Coffee Partners, Endiro Coffee, Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd, Fairfood, JESA, Semilla Coffee, ETG, Darley Investments, Norrsken East Africa, Uganda Coffee Federation, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda +++

This carousel is *not* a victory lap. Instead, it’s a snapshot of the learning that’s shaping where we’re going and what we’re trying to solve!

Swipe through.
2026 is where we put these lessons to work.

December hits hard for many farmers – school fees ahead, holiday costs now – but income only comes at harvest.

Without the right financial tools, farmers end up borrowing expensively or draining whatever little savings they have.

For Rwenzori’s coffee farmers we solve this by splitting their Emata loan limit:

👉 Tranche 1 (December): cover holiday expenses, medical needs.
👉 Tranche 2 (January): cover school fees and early-season investments like fertilizers.
👉 One repayment: in March, when farmers actually have money from their coffee sales.

Farmers don’t need to self-discipline or “save from a lump sum” — we structure the loan around their real cash-flow patterns. It’s simple, affordable, and built for resilience in a sector where timing is everything.

Finance that respects the agricultural calendar.
Finance that makes life easier.
Finance that keeps farmers growing.

What a night! 💙 Thank you to everyone who made the Africa/Week Meetup – Kampala Edition such a special evening. The energy was exactly what we hoped for — honest, funny, and with just the right amount of startup trauma bonding 😅

Big love to our awesome panelists — Tony, Boldewijn, Lillian & Bram — for sharing real stories from war time, and to the Swedish Embassy and the Dutch Embassy for making it all possible.

Swipe for some moments 📸

Our biggest takeaway?
There’s so much that happens behind the scenes that we rarely talk about — uncertainty, self-doubt, hard calls. It was powerful to be reminded that none of us are alone in it. Whether you’re just starting or already scaling, we’re all fighting some version of the same battle.

A few gems from the night:

✨ Get a board early… or don’t. (Depending on if you listen to Tony or Boldewijn 😄) Either way: vet them well, pick people who will support and advise you – and don’t let them push you into decisions that don’t feel right.

✨ Believe in yourself. Imposter syndrome doesn’t get to run the company – you do.

✨ Celebrate the small wins. They’re the fuel that keeps you going.

If you liked the vibe (honest conversations, raw lessons, ambitious people building real things), don’t miss Africa/Week in Kigali (Nov 20–21) — ’s flagship event for founders, investors & dreamers.

The whole Emata crew will be there, and we’re hoping for a strong 🇺🇬 delegation this year!

What is side-selling – and why is it so bad for Ugandan coffee? ☕🚨

When farmers sell early for fast cash, they often accept lower prices and adopt bad practices like harvesting green cheeries or stripping.

The result? Poor-quality coffee floods the supply chain, lowering Uganda’s reputation and keeping prices down for everyone.

But here’s the good news: side-selling isn’t inevitable.

Let’s talk about how we can avoid it and build a better ecosystem for coffee (and other crops)!

Christmas is almost here, but we’re still on the road visiting potential – and existing – partners.

Many farmers need money for the holidays, but don’t have any available harvest to sell.

We help them get loans now – which are repaid at harvest when the cash flow is better!

2024 has been an interesting year in coffee, but we’re happy to have gotten to know more coffee companies & cooperatives across the country.

Farmers dealing in robusta in Kyankwanzi, Mukono, and Masaka, as well as arabica farmers in Rwenzori, Elgon, Buhweju, and West Nile. ☕️

Our 2024 Report Card is in! We wrapped up big wins like new and shiny WhatsApp, a first-of-its-kind crop insurance, and scaling our operations—but it wasn’t all smooth sleighing.

The dry season dried up more than just milk, EUDR slowed down our coffee ambitions, and scaling came with its fair share of growing pains. Check out the full report card below – and see if you agree with the grades.

🎄 In other news: Our office stays open until December 20th, but let us use this opportunity to wish you all HAPPY HOLIDAYS! May your cookies be warm, your milk cold, and your chimneys ready to receive big gifts for 2025! 🍪🥛✨

Thank you to all our partners and friends!

🌱 This week, we launched a new pilot with our partner , embedding affordable financing directly into their value chain.

Instead of hiring new agents, we trained Latitude’s trusted buying agents to guide farmers in accessing loans through a simple WhatsApp chatbot. 📲 At harvest, these same agents help farmers sell their crops and repay their loans – seamlessly and stress-free. ✅

By making financing a natural part of the farming process, we’re empowering farmers, strengthening communities, and creating real impact. 🌍

What does it really take to expand into a new country? Last week, Bram found out first-hand in Dar es Salaam, where he was diving into Tanzania’s agriculture scene and meeting some inspiring people who know it best.

One big highlight? Joining the Growing Together Program Launch, a fantastic initiative focused on strengthening Tanzania’s food systems and supporting local farmers and agribusinesses. It’s events like this that show us the real landscape, helping us learn about the unique challenges and opportunities in Tanzania.

Big shout out to as well, for hosting us at their office and for the great conversation. Ultimately, expanding means more than just setting up shop in a new country—it’s all about building relationships, listening to local insights, and truly understanding how Emata’s financing solutions can bring value.

It’s gritty, eye-opening work that requires a lot of curiosity and patience, but it’s all part of making sure we do this right.

This journey has only just begun. We’re here for the long haul, learning, adapting, and building connections that can help bring affordable digital financing to Tanzania’s smallholder farmers. Stay tuned as we keep moving forward! 🌱

Yesterday, we visited Nyakishana Buhweju Coffee Growers Co-op Society, deep in the hills of Buhweju District.

Surrounded by coffee and tea plantations, we sat down with their team to train and collaborate on bringing affordable financing to their farmers.

These loans help farmers invest in better inputs, grow their yield, and secure their income for the future. When farmers thrive, communities thrive. 🌱📲
