🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Escalating Rodent Infestations
Nationwide Surge in Rodent Callouts: In 2024, UK councils responded to over 291,000 pest-related incidents, with 91% involving rats or mice. This marks a 9% increase from 2022. Notably, Waveney District Council experienced a 325% rise in rodent-related callouts, while Eastleigh Borough Council saw a 134% increase. The financial burden is substantial, with councils spending approximately £40 million on rodent control in 2024.

Birmingham's Waste Crisis: A prolonged bin worker strike since March 2025 has led to over 20,000 tonnes of uncollected waste in Birmingham, creating ideal conditions for rats, some described as "the size of cats." Residents now face a £24.60 fee for pest control services, dubbed a "rat tax," exacerbating public frustration.

Glasgow's Rodent Challenges: Glasgow has been identified as Scotland's "rat capital," recording 13,607 pest control callouts in 2024—more than all other top ten Scottish local authorities combined. A £5.6 million drainage upgrade on Sauchiehall Street inadvertently created pathways for rodents, worsening the infestation

On average, 72.5% of the time spent checking traps is wasted ❗

👉 For example, for 100 traps/stations, even a quick check (10 seconds per station) takes ~12 minutes. With a longer check (20-30 seconds per station), the time increases to ~24-48 minutes.
If access is difficult, the total inspection time may exceed 2+ hours.

🔸 Thus, the time loss per 100 stations is 1.5 hours. Given the hourly rate of an employee of £18 and the cost of travel between sites and fuel, you can see how inefficient this is and how it leads to significant costs for specialist labor. 💷

🔸 Therefore, the transition to digital technologies will save time and money, increasing the efficiency of your work.

🍀 The ecological turn in pest control (IPM) due to regulatory changes inevitably leads to higher prices. Businesses have to invest in the education of their employees (basic courses £100-£500, certification up to £1500).

Technical re-equipment for IPM also requires significant investment: from simple inspection cameras (£50+) to complex heat guns (up to £10000). Don't forget about the cost of pheromone traps and specialized equipment.

In addition, the eco-friendly approach often means longer treatment times, which also affects the final cost of services (for example, deratization can reach £300+).
Therefore, environmental friendliness in pest control has its price. 💰

▪️ Out of 2,134 submitted applications 1676 were sent for assessment and only 44 projects were selected.
▪️ The lowest funded project in this competition scored 87.2 and the highest scored 94.4.

🎯What started as a bold idea — to reinvent pest control with smart technology — is now a funded deep-tech project with real impact potential.🔝
