Banana Lords

Banana Lords Banana Lords is pioneered by a group of friends from various corners of the world. All with the same BANANA LORDS, PAJE

What is Banana Lords? Good question…..

Mambo from Zanzibar. Banana Lords is a community driven organisation pioneered by a group of friends from various corners of the world. All with the same goal, to clean the town of Paje in Zanzibar,Tanzania. We aim to maintain this cleanliness for generations to come, as well as spread and implement our system across Zanzibar and also share the Banana lords system with other developing nations so

we can really make an impact on the mounting problem of waste disposal in poorer nations. We aim to initially set up each community with the necessary model to clean there own lands and after a short amount of time keep there refuse system self sufficient. Why? Your local travel agents would surely sell you Zanzibar as “paradise on earth”, however, over the past few years, the huge influxes of tourists, the lack of education and suitable infrastructure for the local population has left this once peaceful fishing village covered in litter. This litter is either burnt in the street releasing toxic chemicals into the air for locals, tourists and the wildlife to inhale, or it is simply left for the sun to bake. What will my money be doing? We can assure you that each and every penny that is donated will go directly into the project. This is your chance to become a banana lord. The donations we hope you can provide would be used for the vital initial three month clean up operation. After the three months we hope that our Banana Lords at Paje will be self sufficient and with our help generating enough money from the recycling of materials to fund the project and allow for it to reach further afield for future generations. This is as ZANREC, the local recycling centre, provides money for recyclable goods. Again every penny received goes back into making Banana Lords the success we know it can be. In this inital stage we will:

Provide income for local people including children . Supplying Banana Cubs (new starters) with rubbish bags, gloves, pickers etc. Begin the process of educating Paje into having cleaner, safer streets. Provide litter bins for locals to use as they do not get given them by there government. Sorting and transporting the waste away from the local community and to safe disposal and recycling areas. Put in place local people for extra support, who with there unbeatable knowledge of the area and passion, will drive the project forward from within. We aim to provide a source of income to many people who otherwise would go to bed hungry. Jobs here are very hard come by. We will offer membership to locals and tourists who want to make a difference the chance to work there way up into becoming a Banana Lord. This involves collecting litter and junk from the streets, sorting it into recyclable and non-recyclable bags and bringing it to us to further sort, filter and safely dispose of or recycle. With the help of ZANREC, we aim to initially recycle 90% of the waste and dispose of the other 10% in a safe manner. We will be providing regular updates and before and after footage of this beautiful island and the progress of the Banana Lords team. Who we are? Barnaby Chambers

Our Future goals:

To provide easily available jobs to the local community. To leave a model in place with a legacy to maintain a new clean Zanzibar. To educate the local community about the project and importance of safe litter disposal. To make people feel a part of something and to give locals a feeling of importance. To perfect a system that can easily be imitated across many nations for people to imitate in areas that have touched there hearts also. ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE TOOK CONTROL OF THE SITUATION AND BANANA LORDS ARE MAKING THINGS HAPPEN!!!

Historical Background

Until the 19th century, Zanzibar—an island chain consisting of two principal islands, Unguja and Pemba—represented a relatively inconspicuous component of a cultural world that spanned the coast of East Africa, from Kilwa in the south to Mogadishu in the north. Due to an annual cycle of favorable monsoon trade winds, the East African coast was, for more than a thousand years, an integral part of an Indian Ocean trading nexus that exchanged Africa’s people, ivory, and gold for the products of the Middle East, India, and beyond. The wealth generated from such trade stimulated the rise of a series of largely self-governing coastal city-states. The relatively cosmopolitan nature of coastal society was reflected in the very words people spoke; as the main lingua franca, Kiswahili was and is an African language consisting of thousands of words borrowed from Arabic and other languages spoken by mariners visiting the coast, some of whom came to settle permanently and to intermarry with local peoples.

**

The term “Zanzibar Revolution” refers to (1) the overthrow in January 1964 of the islands’ first postcolonial regime, barely a month after gaining independence from British rule; (2) a period of several weeks following the overthrow when Africans targeted islanders of mostly Arab heritage and ...
