Inclusive, Sustainable Agricultural Transformation

You are hungry, what do you do? You pick up the phone, walk to a shop, restaurant or food kiosk and buy a meal. That’s the luxury of city life. But what happens if there’s flooding or drought? In the city, you don’t worry about that. The only pinch you feel may be the price fluctuations because of the irritating inconvenience of fewer vegetables and food.

But the person who feeds our city bellies is the smallholder farmer. And in Africa, smallholder farmers make up 70% of the food we eat across our African cities. The farmers’ food production is limited by the force of nature – flooding and drought, limited access to agricultural extension officers who guide them on best practices, access to farm inputs like seeds, pesticides and fertilizers, new technologies for cultivation, transportation to markets and also dance to the mercy of middlemen who deflate the prices on purchase of produce from the farmers. The list is endless. So how can we fix it? One word. Collaboration.

When we bring smallholder farmers, agro industries who process the produce from farmers, government to assist in policies and build infrastructure and non-profits who work with farmers, you can make a difference. When everyone’s concerns are brought to the table and everyone collectively attends to those challenges in their specific capacities, we solve these problems, and in turn build industry. And everyone benefits starting with the smallholder farmers.
