Ha'Penny Queen is a collection of handmade products that literally and figuratively, don't cost the earth. I started Ha'penny Queen with the idea that a well-made, hand-crafed and fairly-priced product is far more "value for money" than a mass-produced or disposable version. Secondly, environmentally. Wherever possible my products are designed to be sustainable and have low-environmental impact. I
try to use natural materials whenever possible. I don't accept plastic packaging from suppliers. I try to use end of roll materials for individual bag designs. I try to up-cycle and recycle whenever possible. I sell at charity-beneficial markets. I use recyclable materials to pack my postal orders. In a year of sewing, I have generated only 2 bags of rubbish. I believe we must change how we decide on "economy". We have been tricked by product-based business to judge 'value' as 'price'. But they are not the same thing. Price is about money only, but value is about everything else. The lack of quality in our disposable society is surrounding us with value-less junk, instead of valuable beauty. Many mass-produced items are designed to be attractively cheap as individual products, but quality is not cheap, and so these products do not last, and thats great for the producer because the customer is tricked by the cheap price, but then forced to buy replacements repeatedly, spending the same amount of money over time, as they would have done for the more expensive quality product. A well-crafted piece, made with quality materials, can outlast the disposable version by years, giving great value for money, while all the time giving valuable beauty and style to the user. Its time to change how we "Value" the products we buy.
