Cambodia's economy is currently experiencing a modest recovery following the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. As of 2024, the country's economic growth is projected to be 5.8%, slightly up from 5.6% in 2023, with expectations of further growth in subsequent years, reaching 6.1% in 2025 and 6.4% in 2026. This growth is primarily driven by a resurgence in the garment, travel goods, and footwear industries, as well as a rebound in tourism, which has returned to 84% of pre-pandemic levels.
Key Economic Indicators
• GDP: Cambodia's GDP was approximately $28.54 billion in 2022. The gross national income per capita has recently crossed $1,590, indicating progress towards economic development.
• Inflation: Inflation has been notably low, with reports indicating a decline to zero in March 2024, largely due to stabilizing food prices.
• Trade and Investment: The country has seen a revival in exports, particularly in garments and agricultural commodities. The ASEAN region has become Cambodia's second-largest export market after the United States. Foreign investment, particularly in manufacturing and agriculture, is also on the rise, contributing to the economic recovery.
Challenges Ahead
Despite these positive indicators, Cambodia faces several challenges:
• Domestic Demand: There remains subdued domestic demand, which could hinder more robust economic growth.
• Construction Sector: The construction industry is experiencing a slowdown due to a correction in the property market, affecting overall economic activity.
• Long-term Vulnerabilities: The country is preparing to graduate from the least-developed country (LDC) status by 2027, which could bring both opportunities and challenges, such as reduced access to preferential trade benefits and official development assistance.
• Education and Healthcare: There are ongoing concerns regarding the quality of education and healthcare, which are critical for sustainable economic growth. Many citizens still seek medical care in neighboring countries due to perceived inadequacies in local healthcare services.
In summary, while Cambodia's economy is on a recovery path with promising growth forecasts, it must navigate significant structural challenges and enhance its educational and healthcare systems to sustain this progress.
