The United States and Nigeria Form Alliance to Combat Crypto Crime
The United States and Nigeria have launched a bilateral coordination group on illicit finance and cryptocurrencies in an effort to combat cybercrime and illicit financial activities involving digital assets such as cryptocurrencies. The joint initiative, led by the U.S. Department of Justice and Nigerian authorities, aims to enhance cross-border cybercrime investigation capabilities as digital financial activities expand globally.

The formation of the group also coincides with the recent release of Binance’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, who had been detained in Nigeria since February on money laundering and currency manipulation charges.

The bilateral coordination group is in line with the United States’ goal of developing a secure cyberspace while also addressing the challenges posed by digital asset transactions.

Tigran Gambaryan’s release

The formation of the group comes at a crucial time in the “cryptocurrency relationship” between the two countries. As previously mentioned, the group’s announcement follows Nigeria’s decision to drop charges against Gambaryan due to health concerns. While it remains uncertain whether the two incidents are linked, the new group could help ease some of the strained relations.

Gambaryan has been detained for several months at the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja and was denied bail earlier this month. Despite his poor health, including a herniated disc, malaria and pneumonia, Nigerian authorities eventually released him, claiming he needed medical treatment that was not available in the prison system.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, a colleague of Gambaryan’s who was detained earlier this year, managed to escape to Kenya in March. The two were first arrested after a visit to Nigeria that led to allegations of financial misconduct.

Binance has repeatedly supported Gambaryan’s release, claiming that he did not act as a decision-maker for the company during the visit and alleging that Nigerian officials secretly suggested payments to resolve the issue, claims that Nigeria denies.
