ACCESS Consultation Workshop Strengthens Cooperative Safety and Soundness in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal – May 22, 2026

The ACCESS Consultation Workshop, organized by the National Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Unions of Nepal (NEFSCUN) with technical assistance from the Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU), convened in Kathmandu. The event brought together CEOs and Managers from 27 Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS), marking a significant step in advancing cooperative governance and member-focused safety and soundness.

Key Takeaways from the Workshop
The consultation highlighted practical strategies to align cooperative services with members’ aspirations and strengthen institutional sustainability:

Member Scorecard – Introduction of a scorecard framework based on six impact shifts: decent housing, emergency fund (six months of family expenses plus debt service), retirement savings, multiple income streams, and health and life insurance coverage.

Financial Counselling – Training of staff to provide financial counselling, equipping members with tools for resilience and informed financial decision-making.

Business Development Services – Institutionalization of business development services, with a strong focus on agribusiness, to generate employment opportunities for members.

Delinquency Reduction – Strategies to reduce delinquency through proactive collection, renegotiation, and prioritization of members for business development support.

Product and Service Review – Commitment to reviewing cooperative products and services to identify gaps between members’ life aspirations and current offerings.

Significance
By combining NEFSCUN’s leadership with ACCU’s technical expertise, the workshop underscored the role of cooperative safety and soundness as a transformational pathway for strengthening financial resilience and driving inclusive economic growth in Nepal.

🌄 29TH Leadership Bootcamp Series 1 – NEFSCUN 📍 Dhulikhel Mountain Resort | 🗓 May 19–21, 2026

Thirty-three visionary leaders from Nepal's SACCOS convened for the Leadership Bootcamp Series 1, a transformative program designed to spark commitment and courage in advancing the integration of credit union networks. Remarkably, this marked the 29th time ACCU has facilitated the Bootcamp, underscoring its enduring role in shaping cooperative leadership.

Since 2014, ACCU has championed the vision of an Integrated and Sustainable Credit Union Network—a shift from atomized operations to a unified system built on resource sharing, standardization, contractual solidarity, and disciplined governance. Yet, progress has been hindered not by lack of knowledge but by the absence of leadership intention and political will to embrace these shifts.

ACCU adapted John Maxwell's 11 Leadershifts to the distinctive environment of credit unions, making the lessons directly relevant to cooperative leadership. Through intensive sessions, participants examined their personal leadership strengths and weaknesses, embraced new perspectives, and found inspiration to build a lasting legacy for future generations.

NEFSCUN convened the Leadership training program for 27 ACCESS SACCOS, with the hope that a shift in mindset will spark lasting impact. 'The purpose of my cooperative leadership is now crystal clear. My true impact must be seen in our members' lives—helping them secure decent homes, build emergency funds, prepare for retirement, diversify income streams, and rely on insurance as a safety net in times of crisis,' shared Tulmani Poudel, Chairman of Madhya Nepal SACCOS.

🌟 Celebrating 55 Years of ACCU 🌟

On April 28, 1971, the Asian Confederation of Credit Unions was born from a vision of unity and cooperation. Today, 55 years later, that vision continues to thrive.

For more than half a century, ACCU has stood alongside our member organizations, actively adding value to their work and strengthening their capacity to serve. Yet our true measure is not only in institutions, but in the lives touched — the individual members who remain the very heart of the credit union movement.

Every program, every partnership, every innovation we pursue is meant to trickle down to the grassroots, empowering families, uplifting communities, and ensuring that the spirit of people helping people endures across generations.

✨ Together, we honor our past, celebrate our present, and commit to a future where credit unions continue to be a movement of hope, equity, and empowerment.
