Gems was established in Bangkok in 1984 by Joseph Belmont, an American precious gemstone trader, and Pirapan Belmont, a gemstone wholesaler hailing from Thailand’s historic gemstone mining town of Chantaburi. The first was to source a truly selective inventory of only the highest quality, mined unheated gemstones. The second commitment was to grow their business based on the nurturing of long-term

, personalised relationships with both suppliers and clients. For more than 30 years, these relationships have been built on a solid foundation of trust and integrity. These two founding commitments have remained unchanged over the decades. They have been the basis for providing unhindered access to production outputs, allowing us to make buying decisions ahead of the market. They have also allowed our enviable inventory of unheated gemstones to satisfy the particular tastes of gem connoisseurs from around the world, who have come to rely on us for their collections. As a result, our family-run business has differentiated itself within a highly competitive global gems market. Gems is still headquartered in Bangkok – considered to be the world’s leading cutting and trading hub for gemstones – and employs more than 50 staff.

Swipe and discover our Vietnamese Spinel

Luc Yen, in northern Vietnam’s Yen Bai Province, is home to some of the world’s most remarkable spinels. Production has always been limited, and each mining season yields fewer fine stones than the last. Larger, top-quality gems are exceptionally scarce, making every outstanding Luc Yen spinel an increasingly rare find.

Discovered in 1987, these marble-hosted deposits quickly earned a reputation for their extraordinary range of colour - vivid reds, luminous pinks, rich violets, pure lavender and soft greys. Among the standout localities are those producing ethereal, silvery muted ‘fairy’ tones, alongside the legendary cobalt blue, so intensely saturated it’s known as ‘Neon Blue.’”
Colours are typically cleaner and less grey than other origins, often with a luminous pastel quality.

Beyond their colour, Luc Yen spinels are celebrated for exceptional clarity, vibrant natural brilliance, and the fact that they’re almost always untreated—a rarity that makes them especially prized by collectors.

Pantone Colour of the Season
The Pantone colour for this year is Cloud Dancer - the first time in its history that a shade of white has taken the title. This colour sits within the realm of luminous neutrals: an ethereal hue that shifts between warm ivory, pearlescent champagne and delicate pinkish undertones. Bathed in soft white light, quietly evoking elegance. Here are the gemstones that embrace this season’s Pantone palette.Think steely grey spinel - soft and smoky. White sapphire - pure and cool to the eye. Pale yellow sapphire - gentle as early morning light. Together, they capture this understated palette - airy, nuanced tones chosen for their calm over boldness.Step cuts and rose cuts particularly bring out their tranquility, optical interplay and gentle reflections - qualities that quietly embody natural refinement rather than ostentation.

Swipe to discover more on Burmese Spinel:

For centuries, Mogok, Myanmar, was known as the legendary Land of Rubies. But hidden among its treasures was another extraordinary gemstone - red spinel. For generations, spinel was mined alongside ruby and often mistaken for it, regarded simply as a by-product. Today, fine Burmese spinel has earned recognition in its own right, prized by collectors for its exceptional colour and brilliance.Mogok remains the world’s most celebrated source of true red spinel, producing an extraordinary spectrum of colours—from delicate pinks and fiery “flame spinels” to rich saturated reds. It’s also home to the legendary neon “Jedi” spinels, renowned for their electric colour and natural fluorescence.

Mahenge Spinel

Since its discovery in 2007, Tanzania has become one of the world’s most exciting sources of spinel, celebrated for its extraordinary colour.

Vivid hot pinks, intense reds to purple, orange and brown. And more recently - a striking cobalt blue discovered in 2022. While spinel is found in several regions across Tanzania, Mahenge quickly rose to become the country’s most celebrated source of gem-quality spinel.

Spinels from Mahenge are known for their exceptional clarity, paired with rich, saturated tone - a combination rarely found together in spinel.

This piece from our collection shows exactly why collectors chase it. Clean. Refined with this unmistakable pinkish-red glow.

Chromium and iron create the signature neon-like fluorescence that makes top Mahenge spinels glow, even in low light.
