Strengthening environmental law enforcement through collaboration and capacity building ⚖️.

The Eswatini Environment Authority, in collaboration with the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, is currently equipping Eswatini’s law enforcement officers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively address environmental crimes.

Today’s engagement brought together officers from the Manzini Region, including representatives from the Manzini Regional Headquarters, Manzini Police Station and Matsapha Police Station. The training sessions focused on key environmental legislation, including the Eswatini Environment Management Act, 2002 and the Flora Protection Act, 2000 enhancing understanding of environmental offences, regulatory requirements and enforcement procedures.

These capacity-building initiatives are essential in strengthening partnerships between environment authority and law enforcement agencies, ensuring more effective prevention, detection, and prosecution of environmental crimes. Building on previous joint site inspections conducted with the Royal Eswatini Police Service, the sessions reaffirm the importance of a coordinated approach to protecting Eswatini’s natural resources and environmental heritage for present and future generations.

Yesterday, 9 June 2026, the Authority successfully conducted a training workshop for Data Collectors of ODS and HFC Banks in Eswatini.

This initiative forms part of preparations for the development of a national inventory of banks of waste-controlled substances and the formulation of a national management plan. The project aims to identify, quantify, and document stocks of used, unwanted, and obsolete refrigerants, as well as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment across the country.

Over the next month, trained data collectors will be deployed nationwide, visiting businesses, institutions, industries, workshops, and facilities that own or manage refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. The data collected will support Eswatini in designing sustainable solutions for the recovery, recycling, and environmentally sound disposal of refrigerants regulated under the Montreal Protocol.

The workshop was officially opened by the Acting Executive Director, Thabiso Nzuza.
Presentations delivered by the Authority’s technical team covered key topics, including:

(i) Lifestyle Refrigerant Management, which focuses on preventing and reducing refrigerant leaks, promoting recovery, and raising awareness;
(ii) An overview of the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment;
(iii) The use of the data collection tool; and
(iv) The code of conduct for data collectors.

On the 03rd June 2026, The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) participated in the National Stakeholder Validation Workshop for the Forestry Bill 2026. This marks a significant step towards strengthening the protection, conservation and sustainable management of Eswatini’s forest resources.

The proposed Forestry Bill seeks to ensure that our forests continue to provide environmental, social and economic benefits while supporting sustainable development and improving community livelihoods. Healthy forests play a vital role in combating climate change, protecting biodiversity and sustaining livelihoods for present and future generations.

The workshop, attended by the Acting Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, *Hon. Appolo Maphalala*, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding Eswatini’s forests.
The Forestry Bill complements existing environmental legislation, including the *Environment Management Act, 2002*, which provides the overarching framework for environmental protection and sustainable development in Eswatini, and the *Biosafety Act, 2012*, which promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity while ensuring the safe management of modern biotechnology. Together, these laws strengthen the country’s commitment to protecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources.

As stakeholders work together to finalize this important piece of legislation, the EEA encourages the public to play their part in protecting our forests by preventing illegal tree cutting, supporting reforestation initiatives, reporting environmental degradation and promoting sustainable use of natural resources.

🌱 *Protect a tree. Restore a forest. Secure our future.*
