We spend so much of our lives showing up for the people we love. But one of the most profound ways we can love them is to plan ahead — so that even in our absence, they are taken care of.

A holistic estate plan isn’t just a collection of legal documents. They are your love in action.

Let me walk you through your first steps towards securing your legacy. Because when life's unexpected moments arrive, a well-crafted plan becomes one of the greatest gifts you can leave for your family.

If you are part of the sandwich generation, you already know the weight of it. You are raising your children, supporting your ageing parents and trying to keep everything together — all at once.

But here is what most people in this season of life overlook. While you are busy caring for everyone else, who is protecting you and your family's future?

Here are three things you need to have in place.

1. An LPA for every adult in the family.
An LPA is not just for the elderly. Every adult needs one. If anyone in your family loses the ability to make decisions for themselves, someone needs to be legally empowered to step in. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, even the closest family members may have no authority to manage finances or healthcare. Do not wait for a crisis to sort this out.

2. A Will and Trust for your children.
A Will lets you appoint a guardian and direct where your assets go. A Trust ensures your children's inheritance is protected until they are ready to manage it.

3. Have the ACP conversation with your ageing parents.
It may not be as difficult as it seems. An Advance Care Plan allows your parents to document their wishes for future medical care so their voice is still heard when they can no longer speak for themselves. Start by simply asking what matters most to them and how they wish to be cared for. Make it a conversation about love and protection, not loss.

Do not let an unfinished estate plan become one more thing your family has to carry.
