I started my insurance career in 2018 while completing my final year studies at SMU.
Juggling both studies and work was never easy, especially with the steep learning curve in an industry that was different from what I studied. I had to set aside time for my final year project and exams, and at the same time take my insurance papers for the licensing. Thankfully the final academic modules were not heavy, so I had enough extra time to study and complete my insurance papers.
Also thankfully in AIA, we can join cases with 2 agents on paper officially serving 1 client. Thus, the faster way for me to learn when I first joined was being the ‘puller’ during roadshows. My job was to bring customers to my colleagues who were senior and had more experience. They would then sit down with the customers to share insurance matters. By doing this, I was exposed to different styles of pitching, the different products AIA offers, and how all these can benefit clients.
Bringing customers to sit in the booth was an easy job for me. Pitching about insurance matters was a higher-level responsibility which required more time and practice on my end (which I wasn’t able to do as I was still studying).
I’m very thankful to have my boss and my seniors by my side, guiding me throughout and sharing selflessly. They surrounded me with kind words and consistent encouragement, which helped me push through those hectic months of uni and work! ☺️
Fast forward to now, 7 years into my career, I’ve become one of those experienced seniors. If you're a student or a recent grad thinking about a career in financial advising, I understand the challenges and I’m excited to share strategies that can help you manage your time effectively, learn the ropes quickly, and start building your own client base.
