Be a little less aggressive while averaging down – that’s the advice from our founder, Terence Wong, about navigating a market in recession.

This is particularly the case as a GDP decrease across consecutive quarters indicates a likely dip in consumer spending. With two-thirds of the US economic growth being driven by consumer expenditure, a decline in this area would be a clear indication of a looming recession. This, in turn, would have a profound impact on Asia – considering that it’s the region that produces most of the world’s products!

We attended the recent CGS CIMB Securities Singapore and PT. CGS CIMB Sekuritas Indonesia event in Jakarta featuring a start up bazaar consisting of some of the start ups firms and how they harness technology to tackle problems or to create demand for their product and services. We have seen the emergence of several prominent names in the past several years in Indonesia and some of them have even risen to the status of unicorns. This event was graced by the Minister of Communications and IT Pak Rudiantara who strongly endorsed Artificial Intelligence as the future for the nation.

The attending companies for this event include a digital healthcare platform which offers online consultation between doctors and patients, a crowdfunding platform for educational financing, connecting underprivileged with donors , an online intermediary for leasing/selling properties, founded to support tourism, hospitality and property management, a Smart-tech kiosks enabling street vendors with digital POS etc just to name a few. We had the pleasure of interacting with Simas Insurtech and founders of Ultra Voucher to understand their business models better. It is truly an insightful visit.

Ron Tan, CEO of Cityneon, continues to be busy after privatising his company at $1.30 per share in January. Cityneon holds licenses for four brands, including Disney’s Marvel Avengers, Universal Studio’s Jurassic Park and Hasbro’s Transformers. It looks set to expand on its stable and bottom line.

Ron’s effort to grow the business has paid off handsomely. It has been one of the best performing stocks over the past 3 years, surging almost 600%!
