"Dad, how much do you make?"
I froze. 😬
Most of us have the reflex answer loaded: "That's grown-up business." Or "Enough to feed you."
But here's what I've learned about teenagers:
When your teen asks about your salary, they're not being nosey.
They're trying to price out adulthood — what "normal" actually costs, and whether they'll be able to afford the life they're already picturing in their head.
Hide every number, and money stays a mystery.
And you can't plan for a mystery.
You don't have to open your bank account. You just have to show them reality.
So try this — the "Run the House" challenge:
Don't quote your salary. Hand them the bills instead.
The phone bill.
A week of grocery receipts.
The car loan.
The electric bill.
Then say one line: "Add these up. This is what it costs to keep us running — for one month."
Watch their face change.
Money stops being something that "just appears."
They start doing the math on the life they want — and they quietly start seeing your work differently.
That's not a lecture. It's a lesson they teach themselves. 💡
👇 Has your teen ever asked what you earn?
Drop a "YES" if they have — or "NOT YET" if that conversation's still coming.
