I just made a posting to my agency page on the upcoming changes in Sep this year regarding outpatient cancer treatments. In summary, cancer drugs that are off-label would not be included in the list of claimable cancer treatments. While some insurance companies may exercise discretion in such cases and may assess off-label claims on a case-by-case basis, there is no guarantee that these claims would be admitted.

In view of this development and the changes that have been made to our Integrated Plans (IPs) in recent years, we are well-advised to start reviewing our critical illness protection, which is an important component of our complete medical coverage. A critical illness payout would help to cover any treatment costs not covered by our IP and provide an added assurance that any loss of income would be mitigated.

Come Sep this year, policyholders of Medishield Life will not be able to make any claims for outpatient cancer treatments if the drugs used are off-label (drugs that are not approved by the authority for that particular cancer). This exclusion will be extended to the private shield plans in Apr 2023. With this change, many are concerned that there is no certainty that they will be covered for the substantial costs of cancer treatment if the attending specialists prescribe such off-label drugs that are deemed to be effective.

How do we address this issue then? 1 option is to self-insure. This means that the patient would have to absorb the treatment costs himself/herself. For most of us, this would not be a feasible option since we do not have enough savings to deal with these debilitating costs. To ask for charity would mean a loss of dignity (even so, they may not raise enough funds).

The other option is to review our existing illness coverage and enhance it if necessary. Such insurance provides a lumpsum benefit should a listed illness be diagnosed. This will provide the necessary funding to the costs of treatment and the added assurance that any loss of income will be mitigated.
