Aglianico ~ The King of the South of Italy Red wines ~
The Aglianico wine dates back to Ancient Greek & Roman times.
This ancient and thick-skinned red wine grape has enthused wine connoisseurs to such an extent to use the synonym “Barolo of the South”, praise indeed. Although Aglianico is generally deeper crimson than the Nebbiolo grape responsible for Barolo.
However, age-ability, tannins and acid structure mean they do share similarities. Aglianico has much to offer on its own and maybe it’s time to value this exceptional wine for what it is and not what it resembles!
Aglianico is almost exclusively cultivated in the South of Italy, where it finds its maximum expression; it is the signature grape of “Taurasi” in Campania and “Aglianico del Vulture” just over the border hills in Basilicata (in the hinterland of Naples).
The grapes ripen late and harvest starts at the end of October to early November, possible due to milder weather than the north.
The resulting wine is an intense ruby red shifting to garnet as the wine ages. It has notes of dark berries, violet, Bing cherries, spices, leather & to***co. It is a difficult grape to grow and vinify, producing a red wine characterized by strong tannins and pronounced acidity and as such is highly recommended for long aging.
On the palate, powerful aromas of volcanic origin or plum, chocolate and dark wild berries.
This complex, powerful wine is ideal with filled pasta, baked meats, game, truffles and seasoned cheeses.
