Parliament: New law offers higher payouts, wider coverage for work injuries

Mandatory insurance for work-related injuries will provide higher maximum payouts and cover around 300,000 more workers, under a new law passed in Parliament yesterday.

From Sept 1 next year, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will share claims data with approved insurers and let them to verify companies' declared workforce and annual payroll with MOM's database.

"Less-safe employers who are faced with higher premiums will have greater commercial incentive to put in place measures to prevent their employees from getting injured in the first place," he said.

Elderly woman hospitalised after fire at Tampines flat – 9th October 2018 ~CNA/aa(hm)

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that the fire started from a personal mobility device (PMD) that was left charging in the living room of a 10th-floor flat at Block 240 Tampines Street 21.

The fire was of "electrical origin" and was extinguished using a compressed air foam backpack. A water jet was later used as well, SCDF said.

There have been more than 80 fire incidents involving motorised PMDs since 2016.

Motor accidents are becoming more severe and possibly involving more serious injuries, going by first-half results released by the General Insurance Association (GIA) yesterday.

As a result, the motor insurance sector incurred an underwriting loss of $12.6 million for the six months up to June 30, from a profit of $17.2 million in the same period last year.

Human behaviour geneticist Richard Ebstein has partnered budget airline Scoot to study the link between genes and people's desire to travel.

When people have an enjoyable experience, dopamine is released.

"What we have are many genes, such as this one, that can ever so slightly change our personalities and make us more likely to travel or develop a passion for travel," he said.

DRD4-7R likely plays some role in our desire to experience new things, but it is not the only factor, he added.

"Like all human behaviours, environmental factors influence just as much as genetic make-up," he said.

Family of M-Cyclist in Coma sues NParks

The NParks is denying the claims in defence papers filed in a first reported suit against the board in such circumstances.

In the present case, Mr Lee, then 23, was riding his motorcycle at 6.30am along Admiralty Road West towards his workplace in Woodlands Loop when the tree branch fell. It caused him to be flung off the motorcycle and he suffered head injuries

Mr Lee, a Malaysian, lived with his wife, Madam Chai You Yuet, 23, and their two-year-old daughter in Johor Baru. He continues to receive treatment in Ipoh where he remains in a vegetative state because of the severe traumatic brain injury. ~The Straits Times 11th October 2017
