Watched a documentary series recently on Netflix!
Took away some interesting pointers to find out the secrets of the Blue Zone people living long & healthy lives!
(Fun fact: There is an estimated 722,000 centenarians in the world currently!)
Do they actually โRetireโ?๐
So much to learn from them, so pardon the long post of my takeaways:)
1. Plant-based diet:
Blue Zone populations typically consume a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. The Okinawans in Japan have a diet high in sweet potatoes, tofu, and vegetables.
2. Physical activity:
They incorporate movement into their daily lives through simple activities like gardening, walking, and traditional activities.
The Ikarians in Greece, maintain active lifestyles by tending to their gardens, walking to visit neighbors, and participating in traditional Greek dances.
These purposeful physical activities that bring them a lot of joy and fulfillment๐
3. Strong Social Connections:
Social support and strong community ties are of utmost importance in Blue Zones! The centenarians in Nicoya, Costa Rica, gather for regular social events called "fiestas patronales," where they celebrate their community ties and traditions.
These close-knit communities provide strong emotional support and a sense of belonging amongst one another.
4. Sense of Purpose:
The Okinawans in Japan practice "ikigai," which translates to "reason for being" and involves pursuing activities that bring joy and fulfillment, such as gardening, teaching, or practicing traditional arts.
Having a sense of purpose and meaning in life is very crucial for longevity๐
5. Stress management:
Blue Zone inhabitants incorporate stress-relieving practices into their daily routines to promote overall well-being. The people of Sardinia, Italy, practice "sardinian meditation," where they take time to relax with family or friends over a leisurely meal, fostering a sense of connection and relaxation.
In conclusion,
At the end of the day, whether or not we live till 100, let us make the best of the time we have on this planet, earth! ๐๐
