A situation I heard recently made me pause.
A family member passed on.
The family knew she had insurance โ but didnโt know with which insurer, or what policies she had.
So while grieving, they had to visit insurer after insurer, just to check.
This isnโt uncommon in Singapore.
When there is no clear documentation, Will, or planning:
* Insurance policies may go unclaimed
* Bank accounts and assets can be frozen
* Loved ones are left guessing during an already difficult time
Similarly, without an LPA, family members are often surprised to learn that they cannot automatically act on behalf of a loved one who has lost mental capacity. Court applications may be required, adding time, cost, and stress.
These situations usually arenโt caused by negligence โ
but by assumptions:
โIโll organise it later.โ
โMy family will know.โ
โItโs probably straightforward.โ
Often, clarity matters more than complexity.
