Career Management, is it really a thing we should care?

Technology has enabled end-to-end management of talent, making it possible to introduce, track, measure and improve based on the outcomes thus propagating a culture of talent management and retention. A typical career path follows a sequence of developmental phases and shaped by the organization’s career framework in which the individual works. The framework consists of a series of career bands, which represent how jobs contribute to the organization and levels which show the relative contribution of a role within a career band. Being transparent about the career framework can help motivate employees and have realistic aspirations. Career Management Framework and evolved practices enable higher employee engagement, more strongly articulated employee value proposition, increase the attraction of talent, mitigate the risk of losing employees, improve workforce planning, and enhance the impact of people practices.
This is what I learn from my boss about career management. Seem good huh? It’s like a map. You can go anywhere unplanned, it’s fine as long as you are not lost.

An interviewee before going to the interview, asked the firm do you have any strict dress code. “Red tie only” the firm replied. On the interview day, the poor guy wear only the red tie. Very poor guy. Obviously he is not chosen so you don’t need to ask.

People risk: the immortal one

When technology is growing day after day, there will be only one problem left: people risk. Some maybe say so. I believe risk equal opportunity. Opportunity to break-through. More than half of the inventions are unplanned, from “human error”. The cost is high, I agree, and the gain is much greater. The immortal one is which I mean we cannot get rid of it, at least if we are still human (wow!). Also, people risk makes us human, makes me feel alive (imo).

I love the movie 300, where Spartans was fighting against 1 million Persians. This is what a maximized team can do: unlimited. In real life, I like the term “oriented creativity”, which you can use creativity in a certain way to complete your task. Many of us have creativity but we don’t use because no one teach us and no one could. To be creative you need your own time, own space. Thus, a manager should create an environment where you can work individually and as a team when we need. Zapier is doing this way very efficiency. I like how Zapier works. I will build my future startup based on Zapier model.

We just hire a new one. What next?

The first week is the most important period in a newbie working life. This is the time they learn fastest, so you as a employer should not hesitate but give them as much information as possible. If your firm has a program for a new one, it is good. If you don’t, it is still fine. Don’t depend too much on process. Be lean be flexible. These are the guys you have chosen from a dozen of candidate right? They will learn anyway. The key is not losing the momentum. Go fast, learn fast, do fast. In the week 2, they are not a newbie anymore. The real work can be delivered from week 2. Sound good? This may be different from one to another. At least this is what I feel and I did in my career. I believe who are in the right environment will also behave the same thing. We want to learn, to contribute and to grow with the firm.

Let’s look at 2 scenarios: Ellie is a hard and smart working salesperson. She works professionally, taking care of leads and customer on schedule. But there is a financial problem with her main client, thus, she does not reach the target this month. On the other hand, Asher is also a sales person. He is very unprofessional, lazy, never taking of warm leads and there is no hope that he will get any deals at the end of this month. Suddenly one person just got a Jackpot and contact company, which Asher is the one answering the phone, and he got a big deal, twice as his monthly target. You are the manager, who do you will give the bonus and penalty? You got the point right? Building KPI system, you should take care of 2 factors: ability and luck. It should be based on ability, a process. A result might be 100% luck. You should care about it.
