Not because there was no money.

But because there was no clarity.

According to the article, assets were spread across multiple banks and countries, records were incomplete, and family members ended up dealing with disputes and delays for years.

Reading cases like this reminds me of something important:

Estate planning is not just about writing a Will.

It is about making life easier for the people you leave behind.

Many people assume:
โ€œMy spouse will know.โ€
โ€œMy children can figure it out.โ€
โ€œMy Will is enough.โ€

But when someone passes on, families are often grieving, stressed, and emotionally overwhelmed.

If there is:
โ€ข no proper asset list
โ€ข unclear instructions
โ€ข unsuitable executors
โ€ข scattered investments and policies

even close families can face confusion and conflict.

Sometimes the issue is not lack of wealth.

It is lack of organization.

A proper legacy plan should ideally include:
โœ… Will
โœ… LPA
โœ… CPF nomination
โœ… Insurance nomination
โœ… Updated schedule of assets
โœ… Clear instructions for family members

Because the greatest gift we leave behind is not just wealth.

It is clarity, peace of mind, and family harmony. A proper estate plan today can save your loved ones from years of stress, confusion, and costly legal battles tomorrow. ๐Ÿฅฐ

For those unfamiliar, an ๐‹๐๐€ allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you ever lose mental capacity due to dementia, stroke, illness or an accident.

To me, this is not just an administrative update. It is a reminder that
It is also about:

who can act for you,
who can manage your affairs,
and whether your family will have clarity or confusion during a difficult time.

As of 20 February 2026, about ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐’๐ข๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ โ€” around ๐Ÿ ๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ• โ€” have already made an LPA. That number is growing, but there are still many who have not done it yet.

A lot of people delay because they think:
โ€œIโ€™m still healthy.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll do it later.โ€
โ€œMy family already knows what I want.โ€

But the reality is simple:
Once capacity is lost, the family may have to go through a more complicated court process instead.

This is why I often say:
Good planning is not just about building wealth.
It is also about making sure the people you love can step in smoothly if life does not go according to plan.

If youโ€™ve not done your LPA yet, this may be the right time to start thinking about it.

Recently, there was a Straits Times article about a family dispute over rental income from a Yishun coffee shop after the mother passed away.

The son was registered as co-owner of the coffee shop lease with his mother.

He claimed that he was entitled to a share of the rent collected over many years.

The amount involved was not small โ€” around millions of dollars.

But after the sisters appealed, the court eventually ruled that the rental income belonged fully to the late mother during the disputed period.

What caught my attention is this:

The issue was not simply whose name appeared on the asset.

The court had to look deeper into:

โ€ข Who was the true beneficial owner?
Who paid for the asset?
Who managed the business affairs?
Who paid the taxes?
Was there written evidence of the arrangement?
What was the real intention of the family members?

This is where many families may face problems.

Sometimes, parents add a childโ€™s name into an asset for convenience.

Sometimes, siblings assume certain things were agreed.

Sometimes, verbal understanding is never properly written down.

And when the parent passes away, different people may remember things differently.

That is when conflict starts.

Legacy planning is not just about โ€œwho gets whatโ€.

It is about creating clarity before problems happen.

A proper plan may include:

โœ… Will
โœ… CPF nomination
โœ… Insurance nomination
โœ… LPA
โœ… Clear record of family arrangements
โœ… Proper documentation for jointly held assets
โœ… Trust planning, where suitable

We do legacy planning not because we expect our family to fight.

We do it because we want to reduce confusion, protect relationships, and make things easier for the next generation.

Sometimes, the best gift we leave behind is not just money.

It is clarity.

For the longest time, many younger investors were more attracted to US markets, tech stocks, growth companies, crypto, and higher-risk ideas.

But with global volatility, geopolitical uncertainty, and a weaker US dollar environment, some investors are starting to look closer to home again.

Singapore equities may not always sound exciting.

But they offer something that investors are beginning to appreciate more:

โ€ข stability
โ€ข dividend income
โ€ข familiar companies
โ€ข stronger regulation
โ€ข less currency uncertainty for Singapore-based investors

To me, this is a good reminder that investing is not always about chasing the hottest market or the fastest growth.

Sometimes, part of a good portfolio is simply having assets that can provide consistency and income โ€” especially when markets are uncertain.

This is even more important for those approaching retirement.

Because at that stage, the question is no longer just:

โ€œHow much return can I get?โ€

But also:

โ€œHow stable is my portfolio?โ€
โ€œCan it generate income?โ€
โ€œCan I sleep well when markets are volatile?โ€

Singapore equities can play a role in that conversation, especially for investors who want a more balanced approach between growth, income, and stability.

Not every part of a portfolio needs to be exciting.

Some parts just need to work quietly in the background.

๐Ÿ“Œ A practical reminder when helping children financially

Came across this Sunday Times article โ€” quite relevant for parents planning to give money or property to their married children.

In several cases, Singapore courts ruled that:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Large gifts from parents were treated as belonging to both spouses
๐Ÿ‘‰ Meaning they became part of the matrimonial assets if a divorce happens

Some real examples:

โ€ข $1M hongbao during a wedding โ†’ shared between husband & wife
โ€ข $500K housing deposit โ†’ split between the couple
Even inherited property can become shared if joint funds were used

๐Ÿ’ก The key takeaway:

Many parents assume:
โ€œIโ€™m giving this to my child, so it stays with my child.โ€

But legally, that may not always be the case.

Without proper structuring and documentation,
๐Ÿ‘‰ what you intendโ€ฆ may not be what actually happens.

Something worth thinking about early โ€” especially when helping children with big financial decisions.

CPF is one of the most important pillars of retirement planning in Singapore, yet many people are still unclear about:

* how CPF LIFE works
* whether to top up their RA
* how much income they can expect in retirement

Over the years, Iโ€™ve realised itโ€™s not about having more options โ€”
itโ€™s about having clarity on how to use what you already have.

Retirement planning doesnโ€™t start at 55 or 65.
It starts much earlier, with the small decisions we make along the way.

๐Ÿ“ฉ DM to find out about our future event!

I came across this article about a Singaporean who, despite facing a terminal illness, chose to start a charitable fund.

Itโ€™s a powerful reminder that legacy isnโ€™t just about how much we leave behind โ€”
itโ€™s about how intentional we are with it.

Many parents want to make sure their children are taken care of.
But few have really thought through what that looks like in reality โ€” and whether it will still hold up over time.

Over the years, Iโ€™ve spoken to many couples who have:

โ€ข savings
โ€ข properties
โ€ข investments

But when we go deeper, one question often comes up:

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œIf something happens to meโ€ฆ
will my children really receive and use this properly?โ€

Because in reality:

A gift today can become a shared asset tomorrow
An inheritance can be affected by divorce or poor decisions
Money passed down without structure may not last

Some parents want:

โ€ข to pass assets down smoothly
โ€ข to protect what theyโ€™ve built
โ€ข to provide a base level of income for their children

But intention alone is not enough.

Without proper planning,
๐Ÿ‘‰ what you leave behind may not end up where you intended.

With the cost of living increasing,
this is no longer just a โ€œrich people problemโ€.

Itโ€™s something more families need to think about earlier.

So the real question is:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Are you just leaving assets behindโ€ฆ
or making sure they actually benefit your children?

Inflows into Asian gold ETFs are picking up, reflecting renewed interest in physical-backed exposure.

That said, itโ€™s important to keep expectations realistic:
โ— Gold doesnโ€™t move in a straight line

Came across this Business Times piece that highlights something many of us overlook as the year closes:
๐Ÿ‘‰ itโ€™s not about doing more, but making sure what we already have is properly optimised.

A few timely reflections I often share with clients at this time of year:

โ€ข ๐‚๐๐… โ€“ Are your OA/SA/RA and Medisave balances working as hard as they can for you and your loved ones? Small top-ups, done early and intentionally, can compound into meaningful long-term impact.
Useful tools, but only if they fit your current and future income picture.
๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž & ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ-๐ข๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ โ€“ Upskilling isnโ€™t just career-related; itโ€™s part of long-term financial resilience.
โ€ข ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ โ€“ A year-end review helps ensure your portfolio still matches your goals, risk appetite and stage of life โ€” not just market headlines.

What stood out most to me is this reminder:
โœ”๏ธ Good financial planning is rarely about last-minute moves.
โœ”๏ธ Itโ€™s about consistency, alignment, and avoiding knee-jerk decisions.

As we head into 2026, this is a good season to reflect, simplify and make adjustments where needed โ€” calmly and deliberately.

If you havenโ€™t reviewed your overall financial picture recently, this period is actually one of the best times to do so.

Not rushing. Not panicking. Just planning wisely. ๐Ÿ˜Š
