When it comes to deciding which type of investment for dividend income, there's no wrong or right as with everything else in life but the key is still to adopt a diversified strategy.

Both ETFs and mutual funds can provide a stable stream of dividend income but tax obligations is the primary factor why I choose to focus on the latter. During my short stint (13 years) in the portfolio management business, I have felt that mutual funds have been carrying a bad name largely due to misrepresentation and mishandling.

This approach that we have adopted for years, have outperformed the major markets during this challenging period and in our opinion, is one of the safest strategy to build wealth.

2022 has been one of the most volatile year in the history of capital markets. This is only the 4th time in history that stocks and bonds have performed terribly together.

Hope this helps you in your investment journey!

Today on the first Wednesday of October, it is World Financial Planning Day.

It is held to raise awareness about the importance of financial planning and also offers an opportunity for financial planning experts around the world to educate consumers on how to prepare for their financial future.

Hope these 4 pieces of advice that I advocate in my personal finances will be of assistance to you!

I have always recommended that we should have at least one long term investment portfolio during our working years.

It is not just because of the monetary returns.

P.S This post was inspired by someone close to me, who was caught off guard by early retirement.

One after another, car firms have been making comments that COE prices may not be coming down anytime soon due to the demand from consumers.

That may be true in the short term (1-3 years).
However, consumer demand in Singapore is almost always a lagging indicator. This means that our spending behavior usually trails the economic cycle.

As a portfolio manager, we follow the global interest rate policies closely. Given that US Central Bank has just hiked their interest rates just this month by the highest in almost 30 years, we are bound to see some downward pressures on consumer spending.

Hence going back to the point on our consumer behavior lagging behind the global trend, my personal opinion is that demand will fall eventually as COEs last for 10 years and car owners may just stick to their vehicles for longer due to higher cost of borrowing (interest rate hikes).

Just my 2 cents worth. 👌

$1million...ion...ion~

This amount has always sounded far fetched but it's only the equivalent of $500,000 in 2002.

Furthermore, $1million in cash uninvested carries a zero chance of lasting through retirement. This is why, it is not surprising we have one of the highest population of retirees still "actively working".

There is never a foolproof way of planning for retirement income but we can definitely boost the odds in our favor with simple steps (but not easy).

In my day job as a portfolio manager, we have been receiving queries from clients about some of their private shareholdings being deep in the red.

Here's a quick illustration of the reason.
