While interviewing for a job at Chinese tech giant Tencent, a now-former employee asked if he would be expected to use Mandarin at work in the Singapore office.

He was satisfied with the answer that a mix of Mandarin and English would be required. He accepted the position.

But the reality was different — Mandarin was used in the office very frequently, the former employee said. The man, a Singaporean, ended up leaving Tencent because of difficulty communicating.

CNBC interviewed 10 current and former employees of Chinese tech firms to find out what work life is like in their Singapore offices.

Many know it as a world-class brand in hospitality and services, managing close to 50 unique properties and more than 60 spas spanning the globe, from the Maldives to Marrakech. But one of the secrets to Banyan Tree Group’s success lies in making staff well-being a top priority.

As part of its belief that authenticity is what sets its brand apart, Banyan Tree Group practices “using design internally, not just externally” in how it treats its staff. What that means is that the company regards them as important stakeholders to the business, and values their emotional, mental and physical health. This positive employee experience can then be reinforced in their external interactions with actual customers. For them, “Happy Associates = Happy Guests = Happy Shareholders”.

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s economy expanded at a faster pace in the third quarter than initially estimated, while the government expects 2021 growth to come in at around 7%.

The Singapore economy grew 7.1% in the third quarter compared with a year ago, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said Wednesday.

That was better than the official advance estimate of 6.5% year-on-year growth that the ministry projected last month. But it’s slower than the 15.2% year-on-year growth recorded in the second quarter.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry said the Singapore economy is expected to grow by around 7% in 2021 — the top of its previous forecast range of 6% to 7%.

YOUNG Singaporeans, increasingly savvy about growing their cash, have taken to a tax relief and savings growth scheme to build their nest egg for retirement.

The share of younger people with Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) accounts has risen steadily over the years, according to data from the Ministry of Finance. As at end-2015, 11 per cent of SRS account holders were between the age of 18 and 35. This share had risen to 19 per cent at the end of 2020.

Investors can open an SRS account at one of the local banks: DBS, OCBC or UOB. Every dollar contributed to SRS accounts is tax deductible (subject to an annual tax relief cap of S$80,000), up to the contribution cap of S$15,300 for Singaporeans and PRs, and S$35,700 for foreigners.
