Datong Shanxi

Time travel does exist, and it’s located in Datong.
​We started where the history is etched into the stone. Stepping into the Yungang Grottoes felt like walking into a living gallery from the 5th century. The scale of the carvings and the lingering colors on the ancient Buddhas are enough to make you stop breathing for a second.
​As the sun moved across the sky, we traded the caves for the clouds. Climbing the Ancient City Walls was the ultimate workout with a view,nothing but blue skies and gray brick stretching out toward the modern horizon.
​But you can’t feed the soul without feeding the stomach! We dove into a spread of stewed pork trotter and those perfectly charred, sesame-crusted flatbreads. Pro tip: the pickled garlic is the secret MVP of the meal.
​Wrapped up the day under the glow of the Drum Tower, watching the city light up as the blossoms caught the evening breeze.
