When we talk about any type of reality, we naturally exclude the exceptions. The talking heads, and about everyone else you see on screens. They make 6 months of your salary in 1 month. Or more. Their reality is as mind-boggling to us as ours is to them. They wonโ€™t understand us. They can't pretend to talk about a problem they don't have.

Now lets talk about reality.

That is about 40 years of your life, while you are healthy and keen, and have control over every limb. Along the way you will do everything else in your limited time โ€“ getting married, raising children, hobbies, meaningful time with friends, enjoying things only time can buy.

Yet at the end of 40 years working, most of us wonโ€™t have much to show for it, except an overpriced bird cage and maybe a car.

Anxiety is a useful feature of the body, telling us that something is not quite right with the picture here. But what is it?
Most seniors over-estimate their spending powers. Let us remind ourselves our fine country is consistently ranked as the top 10 most expensive city in the world. As of this writing, we are no.7 most expensive. Inflation will climb. Your savings will not. Rabbit and the turtle, except this time the turtle is a rock โ€“ it doesnโ€™t move.

Where does the anxiety come from?
a) Can you afford to stop working?
b) Do you have enough just to survive? We mean just paying for food and utilities, and not much else.
c) Does the children have enough to spend?
d) Does the children have enough for their education?

Remember that a Singaporean is economically helpless in their first 21-24 years. No substantial job offer until a university degree. And even if that is gotten, they face the increasingly barrier- less global competition. But letโ€™s not worry about that for now.

There are 2 realities that can happen. Both possible, yet strangely very different.
Reality A = You lived a working life far longer than you wanted, and you did not leave much behind. Lived, worked and died. Your survivors fend for their own.

Reality B = You have a comfortable life of happy experiences with family and friends. You were as happy as you could be. You had a wonderful life with your wife. Your children were able to mature strongly without taking on stress prematurely in their studying years.

You left enough behind that your survivors do not lead anxious lives. You lived, saw the world, experienced the world for yourself (as opposed to viewing it on the screen). As much as possible, you had the fruits life has to offer.

We all make the choices to lead to one of these realities. Whether our choice is intentional or not will not change the reality. It is what it is. We have what we have.

You might ask if your CPF gives you enough to avoid Reality A. We can only answer โ€œLook around and talk to peopleโ€. You can start by talking to your relatives of that age.

We hope you are choosing Reality B. You can still make the choice now if you are before 50 years old. We assume you want to have reality B by 65. It takes time to make a big difference.

โ€œItโ€™s never too lateโ€ is not feasible โ€“ it is a claim often made by snake-oil salesmen. It takes time to buy back control over your own life.

We work with our partners to bring sound and practical financial solutions direct to you. Click on โ€œLearn Moreโ€ on our ads and let us explore the solutions we need to make to live the way we should.

The SRS stands for Supplementary Retirement Scheme and is a local scheme to help you get more retirement money. It is separate from the CPF system.

3 banks are assigned the SRS scheme and they are DBS, OCBC and UOB. You can approach them directly for it.

Opening a SRS account locks in the retirement age for that account. Your money grows at 0.05% P.A, and you can deposit a maximum of $15,300 per year. You are also eligible for tax relief for the exact amount of money you put in that year. The middle-class worker saves roughly $1000 in tax that way.

If you have missed the boat, the Retirement age in SRS is now 63. Your friends might have their Retirement age locked in at 62 if they registered earlier.

You can approach any of the 3 banks any time you like. Or if you would like help, we can help you.

What we will do :

1) help you open that SRS account
2) advise you on how to use your SRS budget for higher returns
3) advise you on how to get your invested money back earlier than SRS

If you are Singaporean or PR, you can email us your contact detail to [email protected]

We will do our best to make an appointment with you as soon as we can.

What is the largest mistake anyone can make in their personal finance?

Borrowing to invest. Or worse, borrowing to gamble.

Many have lost all of their money, gone bankrupt, and had their spouses and children leave them from this one single mistake. People in their 50s or 60s right now might still have a way to go to repay all that debt. Spouses and children leave the borrower because the debts has affected bread-and-butter situations.

Debt rolls, no matter which bank you borrow from. Any bank would be happy to loan you any amount, because they are getting back much more. A simple loan of $4000 can become $5000 with interest, over 5 years.

Investment is not an emergency. Gambling is not an emergency. And therefore we should not borrow to invest, no matter what our confidence level is. If we are not ready to invest, borrowing only digs us a deeper hole is the ground.

Borrowing is a serious matter. One mistake can kick us to the poor house for decades. It keeps the borrower on a life sentence on his finance, slave to money for many years, dampening his lifestyle and spirit, until all debt is paid with interest included. Quite a downward spiral from just one costly act.

What are the 3 keys to building wealth?

A high savings rate helps you keep more of what you earn. Having a high liquid float around helps you in financial planning, gives you more time to look for a better job, and allows you to not fall into debts.

Of course, if you are unable to save much after the CPF, you will need to really consider a job/career change. Realistically, nothing much can be done if you cannot have a high savings rate.

2. ๐‘ช๐’๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’–๐’๐’… ๐‘ฐ๐’๐’—๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•

As mentioned in a previous article, compounding works wonders on your money, especially if you don't disrupt the compounding by withdrawing it unnecessarily. $50,000 can become $70,000 given a long enough time frame, and good investment performance.

You will need the advice of a seasoned investor on how much money you keep liquid (in banks, withdraw-able any time) and how much you can invest.

There is a special kind of "rich" amongst us. He who wears a Rolex yet have to think twice about taking a cab home after a long night of work. Or another who skips meals to maintain his monthly payment for the brand new car. Wealth is also what we don't spend on. It is vital not to over-stretch ; you could fall into debts, which begins a downward spiral.

Seneca the famed Stoic, born in 4 B.C, left a wealth of practical advice for good, honourable living. A lot of these sayings from his letters are still very relevant.

Letโ€™s take a look at some of these advices from 2000 years ago!

1. A good life is lived a good day at a time
2. A good day is lived by performing activity

Seneca speaks against โ€œsoft livingโ€, which today we call โ€œsedentary lifestyleโ€. He asserts that each day we should exercise both our mind and body, in addition to working. He tells us that the body deteriorates if we do not use them the way nature intended us to.

3. Be prepared for any worst case scenarios

He finds that people often forget that bad things happen, because the surrounding environment and peace only shows good things. We should be prepared for any bad events with good planning. It is far better than to be taken by surprise.

4. Let not your attitude be dampened or roused by events

Seneca was a truly formidable person. Despite being sickly from a young age, his spirit is robust and his attitude is unwavering even in the worse events. He did not get arrogant or smug even though he got wealthy. He did not despair and show worry when the worst befell him.

His stance is that attitude can be controlled by oneโ€™s self, in spite of any event. This thinking was also echoed by famed psychologist and professor Victor Emil Frankl in 1946. Professor Frank famously wrote

A wise sage was once granted an enormous gift of gold by a rich king. He told the King, โ€œYour majesty, instead of giving me your precious gold, I would be happy if you give me rice.

Put 1 grain of rice on the first square of this chess board. Then double that number on the next square, and so on.โ€

The king was dumbstruck. Such a humble request, he thought! On the 5th square, it was only 16 grains of rice! What a small request to put rice on these 64 squares!

As his men worked through the board, he found that he did not have enough rice in the whole country to put on the chess board!

This is the Power of Compounding. Of course no investment doubles your money next year ; there would be no need for work, would there?

But you have a good enough compounded capital growth, you are more than set for retirement. In fact, it solves most of your financial worries and anxiety for the future.

The recent cryptocurrency plunges have been painful to most participants in the market. The sudden and overnight fall of LUNA, once a top 10 coin, wiped $45 billion USD off the crypto market.

Now many are in panic over a separate issue: withdrawals has been paused with Celsius network, sparking fears and rumours of yet another crash, while we still not far behind the dust of LUNA's crash.

What can we learn, if any, from these painful lessons?

1) ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€, as we are called, laymen on the street trading on our phones, ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด. Can any of us common "investors" explain a blockchain to a kid?

Veteran investors mostly escaped unharmed from this mess, seeing as they did not place their bets at all.

Back in April, just 2 months ago, most cryptocurrencies in the top 10 were doing well. A lot of people made money, and some governments even started to buy into Bitcoin. Few would have guessed that such a drastic crash would happen, even on the heat of the FED's actions.

This writer has himself traded on LUNA, when it was in the range of $60- $80. It once reached $110. It was unthinkable that a top 10 coin worth $80 a piece would turn useless overnight. LUNA has been an active participant in crypto discussions until right before its fall, taking out savings from countless investors along with itself.

From these lessons we see that investing is not easy at all. Some people lost their whole savings, some lost money intended to purchase a house, and many fell into depression, financially and emotionally speaking.

Investing is a serious affair. What drives people like you and me to invest isn't usually greed - it is the ever-climbing costs of living that drives us to seek out the best-paying investments. That said, we should be careful in investing, and only invest in reliable vehicles.

You might have heard of people saying โ€œStock X or Coin X is going to the moon! You might even know them. How are they doing โ€“ still working at your workplace or have they really struck gold?โ€

We may have just started using mobile apps to trade in recent years but this is no new phenomenon.

Itโ€™s the same as the uncle who swears he is going strike 4D this week. Week after week, decade after decade.

The majestic wolf lunges at the moon, only to fall and dirty itself in a puddle of water.

Believing that any stock or investment is โ€œgoing to the moonโ€ any time soon is a fallacy. Such feats of sheer luck coupled with extreme demand are exceedingly rare. How many 4D winners have we in a year? Maybe within the range of 30-50. This statistics prove it is easier to strike 4D than to actually buy a โ€œmooningโ€ investment.

It is much easier to make money by looking at what has worked consistently over the past years. History is a good indicator of current demand, and that is primarily what drives up stock prices.

Solid research starts from there. Other elements include investor sentiments, geopolitical influences, supply side matters, up-coming events and more. It can be far too much research for someone in a full-time job.

Let us do the research for you. Click on โ€œLearn Moreโ€ on our ads so we can advise you on maximizing your returns.

You might have heard of BTIR recently.
It means "Buy Term, Invest the Rest", and it is becoming a increasingly popular financial strategy.

Why?

Many savvy people have analyzed the difference between Whole Life plans, Term plans, ILPs and other products and conclude this: BTIR is the best shot for your money.
Term plan locks in your monthly sum for the whole commitment period, and protects you as well as any Whole Life plan, for a fraction of the cost of a Whole Life. Meanwhile money stuck inside your Whole Life plan isโ€ฆstuck. And most of it goes to your insurer.

What about ILP? God, if it isnโ€™t a tangled mess!

The standard ILP with a sizeable portion dedicated to pure coverage sends you the jitters at night. If your investment does badly, you canโ€™t sleep. If the investment does well, sizeable chunk of the profits goes back to deducting your cost of insurance.

And when the market does really badly, like today this May of 2022, you have jitters before your first coffee! You are worried and you canโ€™t cancel the investment, because by heavens, thatโ€™s where your insurance is!

TLDR: BTIR minimizes your insurance cost while maximizing your budget for investment, all the while keeping you insured.

Click on our ads to check with us on how to untangle your insurance and investment, and go back to the time you can sleep soundly at night!

What do quack doctors and crystal-ball weather forecasters have in common?

They both take advantage of people who donโ€™t understand the Regression To The Mean.

This intimidating term simply means things will return to the average, in time. Here is how:

Example 1:
The quack doctor mixed a weird powder of unknown origin in water, stir it and asked you to drink it. Miraculously you survived from it.
A few days later, you felt better. What a miracle healer!

The truth is our body also regresses to the mean, or the normal. It takes us about a week to recover from most illness, including fever. So if visited this โ€œmiracle doctorโ€ on day 3 and 4, and drank the nonsense, your body was already midway to recover by day 7. Of course, the quack knew it.

2) It has been raining for 4 days. You asked an old lady with a crystal ball when it would be sunny again. She rubs the crystal ball, checked her eyesight against it, and said โ€œwait a few daysโ€.

2 days later it stopped raining and everyone believed she had holy powers.

Again, weather also regresses to the normal. If sunny is the normal, such as for our country, it would not rain for long. The exception is of course, rainy monsoons. Then, the crystal ball might not work, but the wise lady would have gone into hiding. Her โ€œwisdomโ€ โ€“ regression of the mean โ€“ tells her the trick only works in sunny seasons.

The stocks market operate in over much the same way. Therefore, either be the first batch to jump on the hype train, or never get on it. When a stock is overvalued, the market will adjust itself until it falls to a โ€œnormal valueโ€. Hype is always inferior to solid research.

Similarly, if a stock is undervalued, yet its vitals look good, it is usually a good idea to buy and hold it.

People who donโ€™t understand โ€œRegression To The Meanโ€ often fall prey to the FOMO effect. What is the outcome? They buy when people are selling, and sell when people are buying.

Invest with people who do solid research. Preferably someone who does investing for a living.

10/05/2022

The stocks market has taken a plunge for months due to fear and panic due to the Russia-Ukraine situation, as well as anticipation from the FED raising interest rates to fight inflation. Meanwhile, more countries have started to ease off the restrictions on wearing masks.

Is recovery ahead or is the financial market headed for more pain?

In our opinion, recovery is just ahead! F&B business will recover, tourism will soon resume, and โ€“ other than Russia โ€“ the world economy should soon recover. In turn, the stocks market will recover and start to bounce back.

If you know the principle โ€œRegression To The Meanโ€, you will understand why we are positive about the market recovering.

This is an exciting time to start investing indeed. Buying now will mean you are likely buying at a low price compared to pre-COVID, pre-invasion period, and you should be able to profit higher once prices go back up.

Rising GST costs. Rising utilities charges. Yet another hike in transport fees. The ever-silent internal inflation. Unexpected rising cost of living due to rising costs from overseas sources (e.g eggs, rice, and other daily necessities)

What can a local do against these rising costs eating away his salary? In our opinion, any Singaporean who can afford it should invest his money. Why?

30 years ago, our parentsโ€™ time, they could afford a HDB house with $80,000.
I can now only buy a HDB House with around $350,000.

You could buy a car with $70,000 30 years ago. Today it is $140,000. Meanwhile salaries have not caught up with todayโ€™s time. We need to catch up with rising costs, especially since we can see whatโ€™s in the future.

Putting it in a salary-forward bank account is not enough. Neither is putting it in a Fixed Deposit that pays you 0.95% returns for a big lump sum. Singaporeans need to invest like how the rest of the world is doing.

Wealth does not happen by mistake. Even if wealth is not the goal, we can think of no other ways to fight the climbing costs.

If you are looking to invest, we would welcome you to click on our ads on investment. There are few things more meaningful than to see another local thrive or survive better.
