AI is redefining irrigation in Europe—data-driven, spatial, and automated. A new analysis shows how precision irrigation is evolving across European field crops, protected cultivation, and urban green spaces. Reported water savings commonly range from 20% to 40% when AI integrates three decision layers:

• predictive models of evapotranspiration and crop demand
• satellite/UAV and in-field sensing of crop–soil water status
• automated, constraints-aware scheduling

On the modeling side, LSTM and gradient-boosted trees can forecast ET with high accuracy when full meteorological inputs are available, while remote sensing (e.g., Sentinel-2 at 10 m and UAV multispectral/thermal) feeds CNN-based stress mapping. IoT soil-moisture networks and short-range weather forecasts then drive automated irrigation, with uncertainty checks, fail-safes, and manual overrides—especially during heatwaves or out-of-distribution conditions. Operational limits are real: fragmented datasets/platforms, limited interoperability, high setup/maintenance costs, uneven rural connectivity, digital skills gaps, and inconsistent policy support. Mitigations include rigorous sensor calibration, open standards, radar–optical data fusion, edge/lite models, and uncertainty-aware recommendations. **European greenhouse automation steps up.** Netherlands-based SAIA Agrobotics has secured €10 million in Series A funding, taking total capital to more than €20 million, to scale its AI-powered greenhouse robotics. The round was led by Check24 Impact with participation from the EIC Fund, Navus Ventures and Oost NL. A 2017 spin-off from Wageningen University & Research, SAIA flips the traditional mobile-robot model with a “plant-to-robot” approach: plants move to a fixed station that uses image recognition and AI to scan and harvest. The system targets a 20% increase in yield and a 50% reduction in labour demand, helping growers automate without overhauling existing infrastructure. Earlier this year, Growers United became the first commercial customer, marking a shift from development to operational deployment. With fresh capital, SAIA plans broader commercial deployments in 2026 and an international rollout beyond the Netherlands.
